📚 If You Haven’t Read This Yet…

This week’s pick is “The Correspondent” by Virginia Evans, a heartfelt novel told entirely through letters, emails, and notes.

At 73, Sybil Van Antwerp has spent much of her life writing to the people around her, from family and friends to authors she admires and people from her past. Through those letters, we slowly discover a life filled with love, loss, regret, complicated relationships, and the possibility that it’s never too late to understand ourselves, forgive, and reconnect.

If you love character-driven stories, books about ordinary lives that turn out to be anything but ordinary, or novels that leave you feeling like you truly know the people inside them, add this one to your list. ❤️

Sometimes the most powerful stories are found in the things we finally decide to say.

This week’s local history spotlight recalls the events of the Battle of Blair Mountain, which remains as the largest armed labor uprising in American history. Following the harrowing assassinations of union sympathizers in broad daylight, coal miners responded to the ongoing oppression with an organized campaign. Thousands of armed miners marched alongside local supporters in hopes of disrupting the systematic abuse that had become all too common for the coal fields scattered across West Virginia. While only 16 deaths were ever fully confirmed, local histories note that many more possibly died before the U.S. Army intervened in the conflict. Despite the weight of such a bloody and influential uprising, Blair Mountain’s history is only marked by a roadside marker along the stretch of road. However, the impact of the Mine Wars remains heavy, especially as laborers continue to fight for their independence and freedoms from perilous and inhumane conditions. The Battle of Blair Mountain and the Mine Wars at large are regarded as the largest insurrection on American soil since the Civil War.

📱 Need help with the City’s new mobile parking payment system? We can help!

As the City of Huntington continues rolling out its new mobile parking payment option, we know that downloading a new app and figuring out how to use it may be easier for some people than others.

That’s where your Library comes in. 💚

If you need help downloading the parking app, setting it up on your phone, or learning how to use it, stop by the Main Library and ask a staff member for assistance. We’ll be happy to walk you through it!

Libraries have always been about helping people access the information and tools they need, and sometimes that means books, sometimes it means technology, and sometimes it means figuring out a new app together. 😊

No judgment. No tech expertise required. Just come see us, and we’ll do our best to help! 💚📱

P.S. If you’re coming in for help downloading or setting up the app, please make sure you have any passwords you may need, including your phone or App Store password. That will help us get you up and running much more quickly!

The Huntington Municipal Parking Board will implement Phase One of its Special Event Parking program beginning Sept. 15, 2026.

During designated special events, a $10 parking fee will be required in identified areas within the Huntington Special Event Parking Zone. The fee will apply only during designated event dates and hours.

Phase One includes the following parking areas:
24th Street East, north of 3rd Avenue to the river
2100 block of 3rd Avenue, north side of the street only
2100 block of 2nd Avenue, north side of the street only
2200 block of 3rd Avenue, north side of the street only
500 block of 21st Street East, east side of the street only
500 block of 22nd Street East, both sides of the street

Signs will be posted in the designated areas identifying locations that are subject to special event pricing. Motorists should follow the posted ParkMobile instructions to pay the parking fee.

The currently scheduled special event dates and hours are:
Saturday, Sept. 26: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 10: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 20: 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 14: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 21: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Vehicles parked within the designated Special Event Parking Zone without payment during applicable event hours will be subject to an additional $10 parking citation.

Below is an example sign. The actual sign will include the designated parking zone number.

We are getting ready to play Mahjong! Dream Lester is going to teach us from the beginning. This is for beginners. We spend each week going over each part of the game.
Every Tuesday in September in 5-7pm. We can only accept 15 players at this time, so we are taking sign ups. Give us a call and get your name on the list.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton.💔

Dolly leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of music, storytelling, generosity, education, and, especially close to our hearts, literacy.

For libraries and families around the world, Dolly was so much more than an entertainer. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which she founded in 1995, she turned her love of reading into a lifelong mission to put books into the hands of children. What began in her home county in Tennessee grew into a worldwide movement, giving millions of children the opportunity to build their own home libraries and discover the joy of reading.

She understood something librarians know well: putting the right book into the hands of a child can change the course of a life.

Dolly was a songwriter, singer, author, actress, philanthropist, and one of the great storytellers of our time. But perhaps one of the most beautiful parts of her legacy is that generations of children will continue growing up with books in their hands because she believed they should.

Her songs will continue to be sung. Her stories will continue to be told. And because of her commitment to literacy, children will continue turning the pages of books delivered with her name and her love of reading behind them.

What an incredible legacy to leave behind.

Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the stories, the laughter, and for helping generations of children dream more, learn more, care more, and be more. ❤️📚

For one enchanting evening, the library will transform into a mysterious forest inspired by the timeless tales of the Brothers Grimm. The evening will feature charcuterie, signature cocktails, entertainment, and dancing.
