City of Huntington fire crews responded to a reported structure fire in the 500 block of 17th Street at a housing dormitory for Marshall University students. The incident was first reported by Marshall University Police Department.

First-arriving crews encountered moderate smoke conditions inside the structure. A quick and efficient response allowed firefighters to locate the source and contain the problem to a piece of HVAC equipment.

All 84 students were quickly evacuated and accounted for, with no injuries reported.

Tonight’s response also highlighted the value of the strong partnership between the Huntington Fire Department, particularly our Fire Prevention Bureau, and Marshall University. Joint training with Marshall Resident Assistants (RAs), conducted just earlier this week, helped contribute to an effective and orderly evacuation.

Preparation, partnership, and teamwork make a difference when it matters most.

That’s a wrap! Week 6 is in the books — HALFWAY THERE!

Today wasn’t about the classroom. It wasn’t about checking a box. Today was about TEAM.

Our recruits joined on-duty B Shift personnel for a team-building day built around hard work, friendly competition, and relying on the person beside you.

Crews battled through hose line deployment and advancement, relay tower climbs, tool hoisting, and finished the day with the Paxton Ladder Drill.

They were pushed. They competed. They encouraged each other. And when someone started to struggle, the team stepped in.

Because in this profession, you don’t get to choose when things get hard — but you do get to choose how you respond and who you become when they do.

Six weeks down. Six weeks to go.

Today we focused on TEAM — OUR TEAM.

It has been a busy few days for your City of Huntington Firefighters.

Our current Recruit Class is working through Week 6 of the Fire Academy. This week, recruits have trained alongside our B and C Shifts, sharpening their skills in rope and knots, basic rope systems, and automobile extrication. The dedication and professionalism they continue to demonstrate are building the next generation of Huntington firefighters.

Today, those skills and training were put into action as Huntington Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire on Norway Avenue. Thanks to a rapid response, disciplined teamwork, and efficient operations, firefighters quickly brought the incident under control while limiting damage to the home.

Every day, our members are training, preparing, and answering the call—committed to protecting the citizens of Huntington with professionalism, pride, and excellence.

The Huntington Fire Department extends our heartfelt condolences to our brothers and sisters at Cabell County EMS on the loss of Patrick McLain.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Patrick's family, friends, and the entire CCEMS family during this difficult time. The public safety community is a family, and today we mourn alongside you.

Today, the Huntington Fire Department congratulates Deputy Chief Eric Adkins on his retirement after 24 years of honorable service to the citizens of Huntington.

Throughout his career, Deputy Chief Adkins served with professionalism, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to this department and our community. His leadership, experience, and dedication have left a lasting impact on the Huntington Fire Department and on the many firefighters who have had the privilege of serving alongside him.

In the final days of his career, Deputy Chief Adkins stepped forward to serve as Interim Fire Chief, ensuring a seamless transition in leadership. His willingness to answer the call one last time is a testament to his character and his continued commitment to the firefighters of this department and the citizens we proudly serve.

On behalf of the Huntington Fire Department, we extend our sincere gratitude for your 24 years of faithful service. We wish you and your family a long, healthy, and well-deserved retirement.

Congratulations, Deputy Chief Adkins, and thank you for a career dedicated to serving the City of Huntington.

-Greatest accomplishments while at Marshall are graduating with a B.A. in Business Administration, walking on to the Marshall Track & Field program, earning a track scholarship and breaking the 100 meter school record (10.49) while also running 21.37 in 200 meters.

I’m originally from Philadelphia, PA by way of Maple Shade, NJ (Maple Shade High School)

-Father of 4 boys (Chianti 25, Kolton 12, Kaiden 10, Kobe 6)

-Currently a Lieutenant for the City of Huntington Fire Department (14 years of service).
