As the War of 1812 stretched into the summer of 1814, British soldiers stopped in Lower Marlboro—modern-day Owings in Calvert County—on their way north in an attempt to take Washington D.C. During their stop, 14 enslaved men and women gained their freedom in exchange for service in the British military, which we now celebrate as Lower Marlboro Freedom Day.

Commemorate this historic event on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Festivities include walking tours, speakers, fishing on the pier, entertainment, food and exhibits at the historic Lower Marlboro United Methodist Church and Lower Marlboro Hall in Owings. Parking is free at both locations.

Find more information about the event at www.calvertcountymd.gov/2949/Lower-Marlboro-Freedom-Day. For specific details please the Department of Parks & Recreation, Natural Resources division call 410-535-5327.
