Help us congratulate our ✨August Advocate of the Month✨ Tonie Sikes!

An advocate for eight years, Tonie brings a wealth of experience to her current case. Even when one of the children, a teen, has been hesitant to communicate with her, Tonie has remained patient and consistent. Rather than becoming discouraged, she continues to show up, build trust, and give her teen the time and space needed to feel comfortable with her.

Knowing that her nudges must be gentle, Tonie emailed the teen and in her first email, she said, “I hear you prefer not to return my calls. I understand that. You did not choose me to be your new CASA. That's just one more thing you didn't have a choice in. Here's my side of our situation. I CHOSE YOU. I had a choice.” She also ended each message with a silly joke, such as: What do you call an angry carrot? A steamed veggie!

This has been a beautiful illustration of how an advocate's patience combined with persistence pays off because this teen has slowly begun to trust Tonie and open up to her. We are grateful for Tonie’s faithfulness, compassion, and dedication.

As the back-to-school season ends, we wanted to share a highlight from the first day of school for one of our CASA children.

This young man has become very bonded with his CASA Advocate. He's unfortunately had many people in his life change over and over again, so his Advocate Bethany knows how much it means to show up for him. During an earlier visit he asked her if she would be there for his first day of school and when he got on the bus to help send him off. Of course, Bethany said yes! She not only showed up for him and helped send him off with a smile but in order to do so she woke up well before the sun rose to drive the almost 2 hours to where he is placed in order to be there ahead of the bus. To say he was happy to see her is an understatement! Once the bus arrived, he ran up with a big smile ready to greet the bus driver and gave him a high five.

This sweet boy can struggle with big changes and big emotions but has been working hard to better handle them. The first day school can bring a lot of emotions for any child, especially children in foster care. However, because of Bethany he was able to start his day off on the right foot and feel supported during a big moment.

Last week we had the privilege of sharing about the work CASA and our Advocates do at the SECC kickoff event. We enjoyed the chance to share more about the positive impacts our Advocates are making in the lives of children in foster care.

Over the last few months, Elliott of Elliott's Jewelers - Huntsville, TX has been creating a little magic! The winners of the 3rd Annual Sketches to Sparkles Jewelry Design Contest finally got to see their drawings come to life — transformed into beautiful, one-of-a-kind keepsakes they can treasure for years to come! 💖

Open to all students ages 5–12 in Walker, San Jacinto, and Trinity Counties, the Sketches to Sparkles contest is held in conjunction with the All About Kids Expo - CASA , held each April. This year, nearly 200 talented young artists entered the contest, sharing their creative visions and the stories behind their designs for a chance to see their artwork turned into a special piece of jewelry.

The winners were announced last evening at the CASA office, where board members, staff, and families gathered to share in the excitement and celebrate two incredibly creative young artists! 🎉

Ani Harutyunyan, age 11, and Layla Monjaras, age 12, had reactions that truly said it all when they saw their finished pieces. 🥹✨ These talented young ladies should be so proud of their creativity and imagination!

Congratulations, Ani and Layla! We are so excited to see your sketches transformed into lasting treasures! 💎❤️

And be sure to keep an eye out for next year’s contest… your sketch may just inspire the next sparkle!
