Love is one of the attributes that makes God, God. "God is love." It is not simply what he does. It is who he is. No matter who you are are, what you have done, or have not done, it does not change who He is. He still loves you! This is the irresistible message of the Cross. "God so loved..." We cannot earn it, only respond to it.

When we think about sin, we often think of wrong or evil actions. However, the Bible reminds us that sin is not just acts we commit, it is also acts we omit. "So any person who knows what is right to do but does not do it, to him it is sin." (James 4:17) This reminds me of Rom 3:19 ... "it's clear enough, isn't it, that we're sinners, every one of us, in the same sinking boat with everybody else?" (Message Bible) This awareness should not condemn us because we are in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:1). However, it should remind us to stop assuming our heart is right toward God just because we don't do certain things.

One of the great deceptions about giving and sacrificing for others is the idea that it will cause them to love and value us more. There are situations when that is true, but few people know how to identify those who will be grateful and those who will take us for granted. The truth is giving and sacrifices don’t make others value us more, it makes us value them more. When we give to or sacrifice for others it is our emotional bond to them that grows deeper.
