TDCJ - O.B. Ellis Unit

TDCJ - O.B. Ellis Unit The O.B. Ellis Unit opened in July 1965 in Huntsville, Texas and operates under Region I of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The Ellis Unit was named after Mr. Oscar Byron Ellis, who served in Texas as general manager of the prison system from January 1, 1948 until November 12, 1961. The Texas legislature enacted a law in 1957 that changed his title to Director and the name of the state penal institution to Texas Department of Corrections, now known as the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

This event provided an opportunity to reflect on those meaningful connections and honor the role mothers play both inside and outside our communities.

The O.B. Ellis Unit proudly hosted a fallen officer memorial to honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving their respective agencies. This heartfelt event brought staff together in reflection, unity, and deep respect, reminding us of the courage and selflessness it takes to serve in this profession.

As we honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we also took time to remember our own officers who, although they did not lose their lives in the line of duty, dedicated years of service to this agency and left a lasting mark on everyone they encountered. Through Lieutenant Patrice Little, and Correctional Officer Shannon Budell, their legacy lives on through the lessons they taught, the standards they upheld, and the strength they instilled in those around them. Their dedication continues to inspire us, reminding us to carry ourselves with pride, support one another, and strive for excellence in all that we do each and every day.
