Day 1 of the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas Conference in Corpus Christi was a great start for the AGED 4388 class! 25 future agricultural science teachers assisted the ATAT Board of Directors in filling thousands of conference participant bags. Working alongside the Board of Directors, who are current practicing agricultural science teachers, is a great example of servant leadership within this great organization.

We closed out our last two days of the LEAD experience visiting the Wonderful Citrus Company/Rio Grande Juice Company in Mission. We headed to George West to hear from the Katzfey family, Tom Johnson of Ducks Unlimited, and the chairman of the Texas FFA Foundation board, Mr. Mitchell Dale at Katzfey Ranch. We started this morning in San Marcos where we were inspired by JC Johnson of the Ft. Worth Livestock Show and Mr. Cleo Franklin, author and motivator! We ended the trip with gratitude at Steiner Ranch Steakhouse for an amazing lunch and said “see you next time” to the new friends we have made this week. Thank you for following along as SHSU, TAMUK, and TTU future Agricultural Science Teachers were immersed in agriculture, leadership, and networking skills to better the future of agriculture!

Yesterday was jam packed for LEAD participants! We started with a fish farm tour then onto United Ag in El Campo to see behind the scenes of the cotton industry. Thank you to all of the presenters! Then we headed south to Riviera to see the Sernas at La Paloma/ El Coyote Ranch to learn about cattle ranching in south Texas. We finished our day at La Muñeca Ranch in Edinburg where we were greeted by the Guerra family and the Edinburg High Mariachis 🎶🎻

Yesterday, our Teacher LEAD and Cultivating LEAD student group traveled to Huntsville to tour the Gibbs Ranch Learning Center and rodeo arena. We learned about beef cattle nutrition and the rumination process from Dr. Lammers and food choice and consumption research from Dr. Chen. Thank you to Rodney Kovar for the tour of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Goree unit horse breeding facility. We also made a stop for ice cream in Brenham at Blue Bell Creameries. We finished up in Katy at the Gerald D. Young Agricultural Sciences Center and received meaningful messages from Living Legend and Bearkat Alumni Mr. Gerald D. Young, as well as Chip Baker, Festus Amoye, and R.W. Bray.

"We are proud to recognize Sam Houston State University Agricultural Sciences for commitment as a corporate sponsor of the Texas FFA Foundation.

Leadership in the Cultivating LEAD initiative, supported by a $750,000 USDA grant, continues to shape future agricultural science teachers across Texas. Through collaboration and programs like the Legislative LEAD Experience and online leadership training, real investment is made in educator growth, agricultural literacy, and workforce development.

Impact reaches far beyond a single program—efforts like these strengthen classrooms, support teachers, and prepare students for meaningful futures in agriculture.

We are grateful for continued leadership, collaboration, and belief in agricultural education.
