Walker County EMS

Walker County EMS Walker County EMS is a true third-service agency, completely separate from police and fire. We are funded entirely by the county.

Mission Statement:
To serve the community, empower our patients, deliver emergency medical services, and reduce morbidity and mortality in Walker County with excellence, safety, and efficiency. WCEMS is strictly a 911 EMS service, we do not perform interfacility transfers or discharges. Established on October 6, 1975, Walker County EMS is dedicated to providing exceptional emergency medical care.

Operating six 911 Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ambulances, our highly trained team ensures prompt and professional services to residents and travelers throughout Walker County. In 2024 WCEMS responded to over 9,300 calls for service. Our units are dispatched to water and wilderness rescues along with medical and trauma calls.

A Shift spent some time today working on triage training for mass casualty events.

While we hope to never need it, staying sharp on these skills helps ensure we’re ready when our community needs us most.

This EMS Week, we recognize the people behind the patch. The calm voices on chaotic scenes, the steady hands in critical moments, and the crews who show up every day ready to serve their community. 🚑

The 2026 EMS Week theme, Improving Outcomes, Together, reflects what EMS is truly about. It’s not just advanced equipment or clinical skills; it’s teamwork, compassion, innovation, and trust. It’s the partnerships between EMS, hospitals, dispatchers, first responders, and the communities we serve that make better outcomes possible.

Every call is an opportunity to make a difference. Sometimes that means lifesaving interventions, and other times it means simply being there for someone on one of the hardest days of their life. Those moments matter.

At Walker County EMS, we are proud of our crews who serve with honor, lead with integrity, and treat every patient, partner, and community member with respect. These core values guide every response, every interaction, and every effort to provide the highest level of prehospital care possible.

Thank you, and Happy EMS Week to all EMS professionals for the sacrifices you make, the care you provide, and the lives you impact every single day.

Walker County EMS would like to congratulate our very own Anastasia “Annie” Papin on an incredible accomplishment! 🎓🚑

Annie graduated from the The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and McGovern Medical School!

Originally from Houston, Annie started her EMS career at Texas A&M EMS before joining Walker County EMS in 2021. During her time here, she balanced the demands of medical school while working two part-time EMS jobs.

She is now headed to Austin to begin the next chapter of her journey as an Emergency Medicine Resident with Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin.

We are incredibly proud of Annie and cannot wait to see all the amazing things she accomplishes. Congratulations, Dr. Papin!

Walker County EMS would like to extend our sincerest congratulations to our very own Josh Loya, AEMT! 🎓🚑

Josh graduated today from Sam Houston State University with a Master of Science in Homeland Security. Since joining Walker County EMS in 2022, Josh has continuously demonstrated dedication to both his patients and his professional growth.

His journey is far from over, next summer, Josh plans to attend American University of Antigua College of Arts and Sciences for pre-med before continuing on to their College of Medicine. His ultimate goal is to serve as a physician working in pre-hospital medicine.

We are proud to have Josh as part of the Walker County EMS family and look forward to seeing all he accomplishes in the future. Congratulations, Josh! 👏

Our crews responded to 807 incidents and made 858 patient contacts, continuing to deliver high-quality care across the county.

We saw a three-way tie among our busiest call types: 58 chest pain calls, 58 breathing problems, and 58 traffic accidents.

With this month’s report, we also began highlighting our Stroke Alerts, Trauma Alerts, and STEMI Alerts. These are all time-sensitive emergencies where early recognition and rapid treatment make a critical difference. Early alerts allow hospitals to prepare before the patient even arrives.

▪ Stroke Alerts are activated when a patient shows signs of a possible stroke. Early notification helps the receiving facility rapidly assess and treat, improving the chance of preserving brain function.
▪ Trauma Alerts are called for patients with serious or life-threatening injuries, ensuring trauma teams are ready on arrival with the resources needed for immediate care.
▪ STEMI Alerts identify a specific type of severe heart attack caused by a blocked artery, often activating the cath lab so treatment can begin as quickly as possible.

Big things happening at Walker County EMS! Tomorrow we roll out sapphire pumps to every ambulance in the fleet. Raising the standard, elevating patient care, and giving our crews the tools they deserve. 🚑

These pumps bring advanced infusion capabilities to the field, allowing for precise medication delivery, consistent dosing, and safer administration during critical calls. It’s another step toward delivering ICU level care right at the patient’s side, before they ever reach the hospital.
