🌀 TROPICAL WEATHER AWARENESS – HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE 🌀

Did you know that hurricane season is already underway? As Gulf waters continue to warm, we’re beginning to see our first tropical disturbances of the season.

The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring a broad area of low pressure that could form over the Bay of Campeche later this week. At this time, the system only has a 10% chance of development over the next 7 days, and conditions are not expected to favor significant strengthening. Current forecasts indicate the system should move inland over eastern Mexico later this weekend.

For Southeast Texas, there is no need for alarm, but it serves as a great reminder that now is the time to review your hurricane preparedness plans and make sure you’re ready before a storm threatens our area.

🌧️ Even if the system does not develop, moisture associated with the disturbance could bring increasing rain chances and periods of locally heavy rainfall late this weekend into early next week.

✅ Now is a good time to:
• Review your family emergency plan.
• Check and replenish emergency supplies.
• Ensure you have enough medications for several days.
• Verify flashlights, lanterns, and weather radios are working.
• Charge backup battery packs and devices.
• Confirm important documents are protected and easily accessible.
• Sign up for local emergency alerts.

🔧 Generator Maintenance Reminder
• Check engine oil and change if needed.
• Inspect the air filter.
• Run the generator for 15–20 minutes to ensure it starts and operates properly.
• Verify extension cords are in good condition.
• Store fresh fuel safely and consider fuel stabilizer for long-term storage.
• Never operate a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces due to carbon monoxide hazards.

⚽ FIFA World Cup 2026 is coming to Texas! ⚽

With matches being hosted in Houston and Dallas, the region could see an additional 500,000 visitors, many traveling from around the world.

Houston will host FIFA World Cup 2026 matches from **June 14 through July 4, 2026**, bringing increased travel and activity throughout the region during that time.

Over the past several months, the Huntsville Fire Department and our local, regional, and state partners have participated in training, exercises, and planning efforts to ensure our community is prepared for the impacts of this historic event.

While Huntsville is not a host city, our location along the I-45 corridor places us directly on a major travel route between Houston and Dallas. One of our greatest concerns is increased traffic congestion along I-45 and potential impacts to critical resources and facilities south of Huntsville that our community often relies upon, including major medical centers and specialized healthcare services.

Residents and travelers are encouraged to monitor roadway conditions and plan ahead, especially during peak travel periods associated with the World Cup, particularly between **June 14 and July 4, 2026**, when matches will be played in Houston.

🚧 TRAFFIC ALERT – IH 45 SOUTHBOUND OVERNIGHT CLOSURES 🚧

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has scheduled overnight closures of IH 45 Southbound in Huntsville to perform roadway maintenance, weather permitting.

📅 Thursday Night, June 4
🕗 8:00 PM – 5:00 AM
📍 IH 45 Southbound will be closed at Exit 118 (SH 75/FM 1791).
➡️ Traffic will be detoured onto the IH 45 frontage road and may re-enter the interstate at the entrance ramp across from Huntsville Memorial Hospital.

📅 Sunday Night, June 7
🕗 8:00 PM – 5:00 AM
📍 IH 45 Southbound will be closed at Exit 113 (near Bill Fick Ford).
➡️ Traffic will be detoured onto the IH 45 frontage road and may re-enter the interstate at the entrance ramp across from Huntsville Toyota.

⚠️ Motorists should expect delays, use caution in the work zone, and consider alternate routes if possible.

Please help us keep our roadway workers safe by slowing down and staying alert.

This week, our crew responded to a residential fire. Thankfully, the home is safe — but we may have met one of our future firefighters along the way. 🚒

After everything was under control, one very excited 3-year-old got the chance to help spray the hose and quickly stole the show. Judging by that smile and determination, he’s already on his way to a firefighting career!

We’re pretty sure the fire service has another future recruit in the making. Thank you to the family for allowing us to help, and thank you to our crew for always serving our community with care and compassion.
