Initial Counseling (IC) between the service member (SM) and a TAP counselor is the first step to the transition process. During the IC session, service members complete a personal self-assessment and begin their Individual Transition Plan to identify their unique needs of the transition process and post-transition goals. IC’s are recommended 24-months prior to retirement date; between 14-18 months before an anticipated separation but NLT 365 days before retirement/separation or release from Active Duty (AD).

All Service Members, regardless of their transition plan and preparedness, must complete four required steps of TAP. This includes Service Members transitioning from active military to the reserves or guard - including those looking to Palace Chase or Palace Front.
