Saturday, August 29, 2026:
Black History in Hurley in the Revolution

The Hurley Heritage Society, in conjunction with the Margaret Wade Lewis Center (MWLC), is pleased to offer a look at “Black history in Hurley and the Revolution” on Saturday, August 29th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Erin von Holdt and representatives from the MWLC will be on hand to give tours of our current exhibit, share information, and answer questions throughout the afternoon. Refreshments will be served.

People of African descent have been part of Hurley from its founding. Though often overlooked and marginalized in historical accounts, Black folks were essential to the building and thriving of our village in every aspect. Free Black men first came to the area with the Dutch West India Company. Enslaved Africans were sought out and chosen for their expertise in masonry, metal smithing, cultivation, medicine and many other honed skills. Both became part of the tapestry of Hurley History.

In the Revolution Black men & women served on both sides and were integral to Loyalist and Patriot supply lines. Enslaved and Free people of African descent were soldiers, mariners, nurses, coopers, blacksmiths, weavers, millers and farm laborers. We will honor their service and reveal how the confiscated property of one Loyalist on Hurley Mountain became the foundation of a mixed-race community that thrived well into the twentieth century. The Hurley Heritage Society Museum is located at 52 Main Street, Hurley, NY.

The Hurley Heritage Society maintains and operates the Hurley Heritage Museum, free to the public. The organization preserves, protects, educates and celebrates all aspects of Hurley’s unique heritage through programs and events.

Saturday, August 22, 2026:
“Patriots and Spies” Walking Tours and Book Signing

On Saturday, August 22nd, the Hurley Heritage Society will welcome noted local author A.J. Schenkman, who will conduct Patriots and Spies focused walking tours followed by a book signing.

As featured in the Museum’s “Hurley in the Revolution—History Happened Here” exhibit, Schenkman’s book Patriots and Spies details events in and around Hurley. Walking tours will delve deeper into the stories of convicted spy Daniel Taylor, Loyalist plots and working-class families involved in the Marbletown Disaffection, and gentry-class prisoners Roelof Elting and Cadwallader Colden Jr. under house arrest in Hurley Village. Schenkman and tour cohost historian Erin von Holdt will discuss the complicated choices facing everyday locals often left out of the Revolution narrative. Each tour will be followed by a book signing in the museum library. The walking tours begin at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Hurley Heritage Museum, 52 Main Street, Hurley, NY.

We ask that you pre-register to ensure a spot during your preferred time slot (1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.) Go to www.hurleyheritagesociety.org, and on the home page click on “Special Walking Tours and Book Signing,” then select the time for your walking tour. A $5 per person donation is requested at the door.

The Hurley Heritage Society maintains and operates the Hurley Heritage Museum, free to the public. The organization preserves, protects, educates and celebrates all aspects of Hurley’s unique heritage through programs and events, including public lectures, walking tours of Old Hurley, and Hurley Harvest Fest on September 19, 2026.
