Our Division’s first AuxPad Afloat mission, completed today!

Auxiliary Paddlers who complete a rigorous training by the American Canoe Association are “qualified” to work on the water, in pairs, or with a Coast Guard Auxiliary boat. Today Michelle Stoddard, the Staff Officer in charge of AuxPad for the entire Great Lakes District, Eastern Region, joined me from her home near Syracuse NY to paddle and patrol the Blazing Paddles Riverfest, on the Cuyahoga River.

Mostly a great day, superb weather, and one rescue (Michelle was involved!).

The Coast Guard Auxiliary extends the work of the Coast Guard. Today was no exception!

The Auxiliary Paddlecraft program, “AuxPad” is growing in Northeast Ohio. If you’re a paddler, and you want to help raise the bar on safety, please consider joining the US Coast Guard Auxiliary!

THIS COURSE is great for the "other" boater on a boat, whether that be a spouse, parent, kid, fishing buddy, etc. If YOU, the Captain of your Ship, should take ill, can your FIRST MATE get you back to shore? That's what this course is kinda about.

More ways to find out what's going on in your part of the Great Lakes.

Local Notice to Mariners is, basically, the broadcast on channel 22A that can be a challenging listen. Many people will find a printed or online version much easier to comprehend.

Mayor Jack Bradley of the City of Lorain is a big supporter of Recreational Boating Safety. His city is one of the larger small-boat harbors in our area, and also one of the smaller LARGE-BOAT harbors, too, with an active shipping route for aggregates and salt.

The City of Lorain has a Marine Patrol run by Lorain Police officers and the Fire Department has recently acquired a boat which will increase their ability to respond to incidents on or around the water. The Auxiliary and the Coast Guard work with these city assets regularly, patrolling large public events, and responding to emergencies.

Thank you Mayor Bradley, and thank you to the citizens of the City of Lorain - the HOME of the USCG Auxiliary Lorain Flotilla!

Happy Chief’s Day! Chief’s are Enlisted personnel in the US Coast Guard who have risen to top, to become petty officers (warrant officers), who lead in their rating (area of specialization) and command (segment of USCG personnel, often by geographical area). It is often said that the Coast Guard runs on Chiefs.
