A friendly reminder with all the young wildlife in the area. If you have questions and see baby wildlife you can call the Huron Police Department before you move it. We will reach out to our wildlife partners and animal control.

“If you care, leave it there.”

This time of year, it’s common to come across young wildlife, fawns tucked in the grass, baby birds on the ground, ducklings wandering near water, and more. It can be really tempting to step in, but in most cases, the best thing you can do is simply give them space.

What might look like an abandoned animal is often just mom nearby, watching and waiting for the right moment to return. Human interference can unintentionally cause stress or even separate them for good.

A reminder that The Outdoor Campus–Sioux Falls does not take in baby or injured wildlife, but we’re always happy to help you figure out what you’re seeing.

Thanks for doing your part to keep wildlife wild. 💚

The Huron Police Department invites you to participate in National Night Out. This annual event brings together citizens, law enforcement, civic groups, businesses, and local officials to strengthen community partnerships. The program aims to increase crime and drug prevention awareness, encourage participation in local anticrime efforts, build neighborhood spirit, and send a clear message that our community stands united against crime.

Last year, more than 15,000 communities across all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide took part in National Night Out, totaling over 37 million participants.

This year, the Huron Police Department will participate in the 43rd Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Campbell Park.

We are seeking civic groups, businesses, service clubs, and individuals to help make this a true citywide block party. Planned activities include food, informational booths, contests, demonstrations, and youth events — and we welcome anyone willing to contribute in these areas.

If you are interested in participating, volunteering, or would like additional information, please contact Captain Mark Johnson at (605) 353 8550 or email [email protected]

This week, we pause to recognize and honor the brave men and women of law enforcement who dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe. Their commitment, courage, and willingness to serve—often in the face of uncertainty—deserve our deepest gratitude.

To all officers past and present: thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering dedication to protecting others. Your work makes a difference every single day.

Three officers have paid the ultimate sacrifice working for the City of Huron. These officers will never be forgotten and are memorialized with a memorial on the south side of City Hall.
- Policeman Clifford A. Hawley EOW: 9/7/1909
- Deputy Chief of Police Virgil Deyo EOW: 11/29/1966
- Sergeant Thomas Callies EOW: 3/30/1982

Let’s take a moment to reflect, appreciate, and support the individuals and families who stand behind the badge.
