Housing is health.

From August 24–26, Health Educator Seth Farley represented the Reno County Health Department at the 2026 Kansas Housing Conference.

The conference brought together housing professionals, community leaders, advocates, and organizations from across Kansas to share ideas, explore solutions, and learn about the challenges and opportunities facing communities today.

For public health, conversations about housing are about much more than buildings and neighborhoods. Safe, stable, and affordable housing plays a critical role in the health and well-being of individuals, families, and entire communities.

Seth brought back new knowledge, connections, and ideas that can help strengthen the Reno County Health Department's work and contribute to a healthier, more resilient Reno County.

Because when we invest in housing, we invest in health.

Would you recognize ni****ne if you saw it?

It might not look like a cigarette. It might not even look like a to***co product.

Today’s ni****ne products can look like USB drives, highlighters, gum, mints, or small, sleek gadgets - and some are surprisingly easy to hide.

And here’s the catch:
Some contain extremely high levels of ni****ne.
Some come in thousands of flavors.
Some are marketed as “to***co-free” while still containing addictive synthetic ni****ne.

Parents and educators: knowing what to look for matters.

The more we understand about today’s ni****ne products—and why they appeal to young people - the better prepared we are to recognize the signs, have informed conversations, and prevent addiction before it starts.

Know what’s out there. Know what to look for. Start the conversation.

A little HOPE can go a long way. 💛

Reno Recovery Collaborative and Rise Up Reno Prevention Network brought community partners together to learn about the HOPE Framework — Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences.

The workshop focused on something simple but powerful: seeing strengths along with challenges and creating more opportunities for connection, belonging and support.

The four building blocks?
🤝 Relationships
🏡 Environment
🙌 Engagement
💛 Emotional growth

Thank you to all of the community partners who attended, joined the conversation and helped us explore what HOPE can look like right here in Reno County,!

Big news for a healthier Reno County! 🏥🌾

We are thrilled to share that Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas has awarded a $25,000 grant to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center through the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas initiative!

This funding will support the development of a comprehensive Community Health Improvement Plan tailored specifically for Reno County.

📋 Amplifying Local Voices
The funding will help gather crucial feedback directly from residents in ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households. These families earn above the federal poverty level but often struggle to afford essential expenses—including quality health care.

🍽️ Removing Barriers to Participate
To ensure everyone can participate and share their unique experiences, the grant funds will cover:
• Participant incentives
• Meals for community focus groups

📢 Next Steps for Our Community
Funding will also support the distribution of the completed plan. This will allow everyone to learn about our local health priorities and find out how to get involved in the next steps!

Together, we are working to make sure Reno County residents have a strong voice in shaping a healthier, more equitable future for our community. ✨

We have some exciting news for Reno County! 🚀✨

We are thrilled to announce that Pathways to a Healthy Kansas Initiative has awarded a $25,000 grant to StartUp Hutch through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas!

This funding will support a two-year entrepreneurship initiative starting in January 2026 where StartUp Hutch will offer two sessions of “Who Owns the Ice House?”, a powerful pre-accelerator course designed to teach entrepreneurial thinking, problem-solving, and an economic mindset.

🧠 Who is this for? The program specifically serves Reno County residents from ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households who are seeking greater economic mobility through business ownership.

💸 Zero Cost to Eligible Participants: By covering instruction, meals, and marketing, this grant removes financial barriers entirely. It ensures our residents can access the tools, support, and education needed to explore their business dreams.

As a Pathways grantee since 2017, RCCWC is excited to see how this partnership supports local entrepreneurs, strengthens families, and contributes to a healthier, more economically resilient Reno County! 🌾💼
