Avenue C and Elm Storm Box Repair Work to Begin September 14

The City of Hutchinson will begin repair work on the storm drainage structure at the intersection of Avenue C and Elm Street on Monday, September 14, 2026. The project is tentatively scheduled for completion by Thursday, October 1, 2026, subject to weather conditions and unforeseen construction needs.

The work involves an in-depth repair of a critical concrete box structure that serves as a main storm drain for the area. The replacement concrete box is being manufactured by an outside supplier and will be delivered during the project timeline for installation.

Avenue C will continue to be closed to through traffic between Elm Street and Maple Street during the repair timeline. Residents who live within the closure area will continue to have access to their homes. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes, follow posted traffic-control signs, and use caution near the work zone.

This project will restore and strengthen an essential component of the City’s storm drainage system, supporting reliable drainage performance in the area.

The signals are officially up at 20th & Main and 23rd & Main as we get ready to welcome Kansas State Fair traffic to Hutchinson.

For the next week, they’ll flash red in all directions before switching to normal operation next Wednesday.

A few weeks ago, the City of Hutchinson invited the community to help shape the conversation around potential data center regulations. The response was significant.

Built to give everyone a voice, more than 120 people participated in our Data Center Open House, providing over 1,000 individual pieces of feedback through questionnaires, dot voting, sticky notes, written comments, and conversations with City staff.

The feedback showed broad concern about the potential impacts of data centers, particularly related to water and power demand, environmental impacts, noise, and land use compatibility. Many participants expressed opposition to data centers altogether, while the feedback also identified areas where thoughtful regulations and safeguards could potentially address or reduce some community concerns if data centers are permitted.

Some of the key themes we heard included:
• Preference for locating large-scale data centers in existing industrial areas and away from residential neighborhoods
• Support for case-by-case review and limits on facility size
• Strong interest in protecting water resources, including closed-loop cooling, water-use limits, and groundwater protections
• Support for strong regulatory safeguards and monitoring requirements
• An expectation that developers, rather than the community, should be responsible for infrastructure, monitoring, mitigation, and other costs associated with their projects

So, what happens next?

This feedback is one part of a larger effort to develop data center regulations that fit Hutchinson. City staff are also gathering input through community focus groups, reviewing nationwide best practices, and evaluating regulations adopted by peer communities.

Staff will bring these findings together for the Planning Commission and begin identifying areas of agreement that can help shape a potential regulatory framework. There may also be additional opportunities for community input as that work progresses.

Splash Pad Season Update

As summer winds down, our splash pads will soon begin closing for the season.

The Fairgrounds Splash Pad will close Tuesday, September 8, ahead of the Kansas State Fair due to its proximity to the fairgrounds and the increased traffic in the area.

The rest of Hutchinson’s splash pads will remain open through Monday, September 28.

There’s still time to enjoy a few more splash pad days before the season comes to an end! ☀️

🚧 30th Avenue Storm Pipe Repair Update

Work continues to make good progress on the storm pipe repair on 30th Avenue.

The excavation and removal of the damaged storm pipe are now complete. Crews expect to finish installing the replacement pipe and backfilling the area by the end of today.

For the remainder of the week, work will focus on restoring the street, curb and gutter, and sidewalk, including concrete and pavement work.

Once the necessary concrete curing time is factored in, we are targeting Wednesday, September 9, for the roadway to reopen.
