Though nearly a year has passed since the poverty simulation, several conversations have taken place as we seek the way forward to "Facilitate collaboration to help individuals and our community move from poverty toward sufficiency with dignity." This is a draft mission statement, open for discussion at this meeting. Is this representative of the direction and purpose of our group?
One important concept pointed out by Ron Fisher, our coach, is the way we approach this type of problem solving. I tend to move quickly to a solution, because I like to solve problems and make them go away - technical problem solving. It is tougher to come up with a solution when it involves people, families, unique situations, emotions, dignity, love, and respect. The same problem may require an entirely different solution in one situation versus another. This is called adaptive problem solving - asking questions, getting to know the people involved, understanding, and caring.
Even though we have not produced visible evidence of progress, we have sought to develop an understanding of the scope of the challenge for the group and what role we might have as individuals. I think this is also an adaptive process.
We welcome you to the process.
