City of Hutchinson, MN

City of Hutchinson, MN Hutchinson is a “Charter City” and was founded in 1855 by the Hutchinson Brothers – John, Asa, and Judson.

This page exists to foster better communication with our residents, businesses and visitors, and the City will be using this site to provide news and up-to-date information on the “happenings” of the City and city government. We are the largest city in McLeod County with a population over 14,200. We are considered a regional center and the “economic hub” of McLeod County and the surrounding areas.

The City encompasses over 9 square miles and includes over 90 miles of streets and about 30 miles of city sidewalks. We take pride in our “urban forestry”, which includes over 13,700 public trees, and we cherish being a steward of the environment to ensure the protection of the natural resources that embody and surround Hutchinson. With over 35% of our workforce employed in the manufacturing sector, Hutchinson is known as “Minnesota’s Manufacturing City” with a large cluster of precision, high-tech manufacturing companies that ship product throughout the entire world. 3M is the largest employer in town and Hutchinson is home to the largest 3M plant in North America. We have an active and busy downtown which is home to Hutchinson’s art community. Hutchinson has the nation’s second oldest platted city park system (second to New York City’s Central Park). We take great joy in our extensive park, recreation and trail system which includes 37 city parks, 21 playgrounds, 22 ball fields, 15 shelters, one campground, a recreation center, an ice rink with two sheets of ice, an outdoor aquatic center, an event center, and over 30 acres of prairie. The City contains roughly 22 miles of city trails, and the 63 mile picturesque Luce Line State Trail passes through Hutchinson along the banks of the Crow River. Our vision for the city of Hutchinson is that we will continue to be an involved, progressive and innovative community that promotes our regional prominence while preserving our hometown character and delivering quality, cost-effective services. We hope to achieve this vision by focusing on 6 core values: Public Safety; Health and Recreation; Transportation and Mobility; Economic Development; the Environment; and by providing for Good Government. Thank you to all the Hutchinson families who stopped by our booth at the McLeod County Fair this weekend! So many great conversations and questions about composting!

And a special welcome to the families who headed home with a food scrap collection kit! It’s great to see more residents putting their organics carts to full use and sending those kitchen scraps to Creekside Soils to be recycled into compost.

We also loved seeing a few faces light up when they got to take home some goodies from our garden along the way. 🌱

Feel free to reach out if you missed us! https://hutchinsonmn.gov/city-services/utilities/composting/

🎡 Find Compost it Right at the McLeod County Fair!

We’ll be in the Commercial Building Thursday–Sunday, August 20–23 talking all things curbside organics! Stop by with your questions, learn more about where your organics go after collection, the composting process, and why this service is so important to our community.

Hutchinson residents: Already have a green lid organics cart but haven’t started collecting food scraps yet? Come grab a free starter kit with:

- Kitchen collection bin
- Compostable bags
- Information on what’s accepted

You don’t have to collect a lot to make an impact, small scraps make a big difference! 🌱

☎️ You Called, We Answered!

A resident recently asked if produce stickers are an issue in the green-lid organics cart. They are! Produce stickers are made of plastic and do not break down during composting.

Please remove stickers, twist ties, rubber bands, etc. from fruits and vegetables before placing scraps in your organics bin. It may seem small, but every sticker removed helps us create cleaner finished compost!

Great question! Have one of your own? Find our contact number at the link below and give us a call. Your question could be featured next week! https://hutchinsonmn.gov/city-services/utilities/composting/

Compost it Right is headed to the Garlic Festival! As the City of Hutchinson’s curbside organics education program, we’ll be there to answer questions, talk about what belongs in your green lid cart, and share more about where your food scraps and yard waste go after collection.

Hosted by the Crow River Sustainable Farming Association, the Minnesota Garlic Festival celebrates local food, music, artisans and, of course, garlic! Sustainability is also a core part of the festival, with a focus on low waste with mostly compostable serveware.

Saturday, August 15 | 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. | Rain or Shine
