In our ongoing “Who is WCESD #3?” series, we’re continuing to explain how Williamson County ESD #3 (Hutto Fire Rescue) is structured and how decisions are made within our district.

WCESD #3 is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, appointed by the elected members of the Williamson County Commissioners Court. The Board provides financial oversight and sets the strategic direction for the District, helping ensure taxpayer resources are used responsibly and effectively. While appointed, the Board is ultimately accountable to the citizens of our District through transparent governance and public oversight.

The Fire Chief serves as the District’s Chief Executive Officer, leading daily operations and working with the Board and District personnel to ensure our services meet the needs of the community.

This governance model is common in local government and is designed to provide both community-focused oversight and professional management.

As a public entity, WCESD #3 operates under Texas open government laws. Board meetings are open to the public, budgets and financial records are publicly available, and major decisions are made in transparent public sessions.

Our mission remains rooted in service, transparency, accountability, and providing exceptional emergency services to the communities we protect.

The loss of a firefighter is felt across the entire fire service. Our thoughts are with Zach’s family, friends, and loved ones, as well as the members of the Round Rock Fire Department who served beside him.

Over the weekend, the Round Rock Fire Department lost one of our own. Fire Driver Zach French served this community alongside the men and women of RRFD for nearly 19 years, and his loss is being felt throughout our department and the public safety community.

We are grateful for the support shown by neighboring agencies, our fellow employees, hospital staff and the community during this difficult time. Many community members may have noticed neighboring agencies assisting with emergency response coverage or gatherings of our firefighters over the past several days. These acts of support allowed our firefighters the opportunity to be together and support one another, and we are deeply appreciative of everyone who made that possible.

Out of respect for the family, we will not be sharing additional details at this time. We ask that you keep Zach’s family, friends and fellow firefighters in your thoughts and prayers.

Yesterday, we shared who Williamson County Emergency Services District #3 (Hutto Fire Rescue) is. Today, we’re answering another common question: Where does WCESD #3 provide service? 🚒

We proudly serve more than 65,000 people across 63 square miles. Our district includes all of the City of Hutto as well as the surrounding areas outside of Hutto city limits.

We currently operate four strategically located fire stations throughout our district, along with a headquarters facility that supports day-to-day operations.

In addition, we are already planning two future fire stations in the following locations to keep pace with the continued growth of our community:
📍Near the intersection of N FM 1660/Main Hippo Drive, by the Hutto Ninth Grade Center.
📍Near County Road 132 and the future “Megasite”.

For more than 25 years, the firefighters at Hutto Fire Rescue have served our community so consistently and well that many people have never had a reason to ask who is providing those services. 🚒

This is the first of a series of informational posts we'll be sharing to help our community better understand who we are, and we’re starting with the basics: What is Williamson County Emergency Services District #3?

Williamson County Emergency Services District #3 (WCESD #3), best known as Hutto Fire Rescue, is the local government entity responsible for providing fire protection and emergency services to Hutto and surrounding areas. INCIDENT RECAP: At approximately 12:53 AM on May 27, Hutto Fire Rescue (WCESD #3) responded to a residential structure fire in the 500 block of Windy Reed Rd after a home was believed to have been struck by lightning.

All occupants had safely evacuated prior to firefighters arriving on scene. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke coming from the residence and quickly initiated fire attack operations to locate and extinguish the fire. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours conducting overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. The home sustained significant smoke and water damage. No injuries were reported.

Responding units included Hutto Ladder 1, Hutto Engines 2, 3, and 4, Hutto Squad 1, Hutto Battalion 1, Taylor Engine 3, and Williamson County EMS.

⚡→🏠→🔥 This incident serves as an important reminder that lightning strikes can cause house fires, sometimes hidden inside attics, walls, and electrical systems. If your home is struck by lightning, monitor for smoke or burning odors, and if needed, evacuate and call 911 immediately. Early notification gives firefighters the best opportunity to quickly locate and contain a fire before it spreads further through the home.

----
UPDATE (1:45 AM): The fire has been extinguished and there are no reported injuries. Crews will remain on scene for approximately the next hour, so please continue to avoid the area.

----
(1:10 AM): Hutto Fire Rescue (WCESD #3) crews are currently on scene of a structure fire on the 500 block of Windy Reed Rd. Please avoid the area.
