Fair Housing Month commemorates the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, which made it illegal to discriminate in housing based on race, color, religion, or national origin. The law was passed just days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., following years of advocacy to end segregation and housing inequality.

Today, the law has been expanded to include protections based on s*x, disability, and family status, but the work is not finished.

Fair housing is about more than policy. It is about ensuring that everyone has a safe, stable place to call home.

The numbers tell the story.

• $3,200 average rent for a two-bedroom
• Nearly $800,000 median home price
• 500+ applicants for just 14 affordable homes

This is the reality of the Cape Cod housing crisis.

In her latest editorial, Alisa Magnotta outlines the progress we’ve made — from welcoming families into 95 new homes to opening the Family Empowerment Center and launching transitional housing for youth.

But even with this progress, the need remains urgent.
Your support allows us to respond to immediate crises while building long-term solutions.

This 2011 headline says a lot.

U.S. Census: Young adults flee Cape Cod

They leave the Cape, they say, because the housing is unaffordable or because the social options are scarce.

When young workers leave and retirees replace them, the math changes:

• Fewer teachers
• Fewer nurses
• Fewer tradespeople
• Higher costs for everyone

Housing isn’t political.
It’s structural.
The good news? It’s solvable.
Follow for solutions.

Is affordable housing a scam for developers?

Let's break it down.

Affordable housing:

• Requires strict income limits
• Includes long-term affordability protections
• Is heavily regulated
• Often includes public/private partnerships

Developers don’t set eligibility rules.
Communities do.

If we don’t build regulated housing, the market builds $900,000 homes instead.

Which one helps locals?

“Across the region, there’s a lot of support among business owners for housing that their employees can attain and maintain so that they can have a dependable workforce,” said Bert Talerman, president of Cape Cod 5.

Cape Cod 5 donated $100,000 to Housing Assistance’s $5M capital campaign, supporting affordable and workforce housing across Cape Cod.

Affordable housing doesn’t happen overnight and it doesn’t happen with one solution.

At Mashpee’s latest “Let’s Talk Housing” session, regional leaders shared what goes into creating developments like this, from layered funding to meeting a range of income levels.

It’s also important to recognize the Town of Mashpee for their commitment, not only through this speaker series, but through real action.

As David Quinn shared, “We are trying to target different income levels and different types of housing, such as rental and homeownership, to really capture the broad swath of the housing need on Cape Cod.”

Expanding options across the spectrum remains key and progress starts with conversations like these.
