🚔✈️ Barnstable Police Drone Demonstration at West Villages Elementary School ✈️🚔
Recently, Sergeant Ross and Officer Cunningham had the pleasure of visiting West Villages Elementary School and introducing our wonderful kindergarten students to a very special piece of equipment—the Barnstable Police Department Drone.
The students learned how this advanced technology helps our officers serve and protect the community. Our drone is used to:
🔹 Investigate traffic crashes
🔹 Search for lost or endangered persons
🔹 Assist in locating suspects
🔹 Enhance public safety for residents and visitors throughout the Town of Barnstable
The kindergarten students asked great questions and were excited to see how technology plays an important role in modern policing. We appreciate the opportunity to connect with our youngest community members and share how we work every day to keep Barnstable safe.
Thank you to the students and staff at West Villages Elementary School for welcoming us into your classroom! 🚁 👮‍♀️

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the Barnstable Police Department received a 911 call reporting a vicious dog attack at a home in Hyannis. The hysterical caller informed dispatch that a dog was violently attacking another dog inside the home.

Officers Brandon Sanders and Rebecca Tatzel-Mandel arrived on scene simultaneously and found the situation to be chaotic. Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel entered the home and located a severely injured pet dog in the kitchen. Officers immediately began administering lifesaving aid to the critically injured dog, named Newnew. Officer Sanders returned to his cruiser to retrieve a medical bag, while Officer Tatzel-Mandel began assessing Newnew’s extensive injuries.

Working together, Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel applied QuikClot and bandages to Newnew’s most serious wounds in an effort to stop the bleeding and stabilize her condition.

The officers then coordinated with Sgt. Butler and Animal Control Officer Charles Lewis to arrange emergency transportation for Newnew to an Animal Hospital for urgent veterinary treatment.

The following day, Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel visited Newnew at the hospital and found her in stable condition, thanks to their efforts and the emergency medical care provided by the veterinary staff.

The Barnstable Police Department recently had the opportunity to work with local high school students on the importance of safe driving and the dangers of distracted and impaired operation.

During the training, students participated in hands-on activities using Fatal Vision Goggles, which simulate the effects alcohol can have on the brain, vision, coordination, and reaction time. The exercise provided students with a realistic perspective on how impairment and distractions can impact decision-making behind the wheel.

Programs like this help reinforce the importance of staying focused, making responsible choices, and keeping our roadways safe for everyone.
The School Resource Officer Unit looks forward to our next opportunity to educate and engage with students in our community. 🚔🚗

Today as we near the end of National Police Week, the Barnstable Police Department remembers and honors the service and sacrifice of Patrol Officer Edward Landers.

On October 17, 1984, Officer Landers suffered a fatal heart attack while struggling with a subject during a domestic violence call. As he worked to place the individual into handcuffs, he collapsed. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Officer Landers was a United States Army veteran and had faithfully served the Barnstable community for 24 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

His dedication to duty, even in the most difficult moments, reflects the commitment shared by all who wear the badge.

We remember Officer Landers today with respect, gratitude, and honor for a life spent in service to others.
