Barnstable Water Resources

Barnstable Water Resources Clean water, healthy future. Estuaries, ponds & drinking water. Protecting what makes Barnstable beautiful, together. Stay informed & involved!

Together we must protect and enhance the quality of Barnstable’s water resources—coastal waters, freshwater ponds and lakes, and drinking water—through comprehensive planning, sustainable infrastructure development, and community engagement. The Barnstable Water Resources website serves as a central hub for information and updates related to the Town of Barnstable’s Comprehensive Wastewater Manage

ment Plan (CWMP). This state-approved, science-based plan aims to manage nutrient pollution from wastewater, primarily by transitioning properties from septic systems to a municipal sewer system. By doing so, we strive to restore and preserve the health of our waterways, ensuring they meet regulatory standards and support the community’s environmental and economic well-being.

This year, you showed us what resonates. 💙

From pop-culture moments that made water education feel approachable, to quiet shots that reminded us why this work matters, to behind-the-scenes days spent sampling the waters we all love — these were the posts you connected with most.

They tell one story: Barnstable cares deeply about its water.

And together, we’re learning, asking questions, and showing up for the long-term work of protecting our water resources through the CWMP.

Thank you for watching, sharing, commenting, and being part of this growing community. Here’s to cleaner water, informed neighbors, and continuing the work — together. 💧✨

This view, this water. This is what we work for.

Barnstable’s coastal waters 🌊 shape how we live, work, and play. But too much nitrogen — mostly from our onsite septic systems — is harming the places we love.

Sewer projects 🚧 aren’t just construction.

They’re part of a comprehensive plan, including nature based 🌿 solutions and alternative technologies, that shape long-term protection for our ponds, embayments, wildlife, and future generations of Cape Codders.

Thank you for your patience as this important work moves forward. Thank you for being a part of a stronger, more resilient Barnstable 💙

"Why does Barnstable have a Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan?"

💧Our water defines how we live, work, and play.
Protecting it protects Barnstable...

👉 Most nitrogen pollution comes from our onsite septic systems, and it’s harming our ponds and coastal waters.

👉 That’s why sewering is necessary in many areas to restore water quality and meet state regulatory standards.

👉 The CWMP is long-term and adaptive. It's required to be reviewed every 5 years using the latest science and community input.

Cleaner water 🤝 a stronger community.
