It is with very heavy hearts that we share this sad news.
Stuart Eisenberg, the founding Executive Director of the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation, sadly passed away this week at home in Hyattsville, Maryland.
Stuart was the driving force behind HyCDC’s transformation from a newly founded nonprofit into an impactful community organization. He helped shape HyCDC’s core mission at the time, developing arts and public spaces, spurring economic development, and rebuilding the city’s commercial corridors.
Stuart served as Executive Director of HyCDC from 2005 to 2025, when he decided to retire and pursue other endeavors. His contributions to Hyattsville and the Gateway Arts District were numerous, driving economic development and revitalization throughout the area.
Stuart’s impact extended well beyond HyCDC as he also served as a City of Hyattsville Councilmember, sat on the boards of the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area and the Hyattsville Preservation Association, managed the Gateway Arts District, and was a member of the Oddfellows.
One of Stuart’s crowning accomplishments was the Hyattsville Arts Festival, which grew under his stewardship into one of the area’s largest arts festivals now entering its 17th year. This year’s festival will include a special tribute to Stuart, honoring his memory and the many contributions he made to this community.
Stuart could usually be found on his bike, enjoying the Trolley Trail he helped bring to fruition, or joining the group rides organized by Arrow Bicycle.
Stuart’s years of leadership and dedication in shaping the community of Hyattsville will not be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire the arts, economic growth, and civic spirit that define this city for generations to come.
