Atlatl: What in the world is that?

It is the hunting tool that pre-dates the bow and arrow. Simply described, it is a spear thrower; it is an extension of your arm used to throw a spear or dart faster and farther than by hand alone.

Atlatls have been found and used all over the world. Wyoming’s oldest known atlatl was discovered by Dr. George Frison and his team at Spring Creek Cave near Ten Sleep, and is believed to be around 2,000 years old.

Today, visitors had the chance to throw 6-ft darts using an atlatl. Some went home with cardboard mammoth meat, and others went home hungry (park staff included). 🤣 🤣

Bighorn Sheep are native to Wyoming, and are often found in rocky terrain. Sometimes you have to look hard to find them, bighorn sheep coloring often blends in to the sides of the mountains.

Bighorn sheep rams have large curled horns that can weigh 30 or more pounds. Imagine carrying 4 gallons of milk on top of your head climbing up the side of a cliff. 😳

If you were at the Big Horn County Fair Parade yesterday, you may have seen us! There was a great turnout of people, despite the heat, and so many smiling faces!

We enjoyed celebrating the county and our country’s 250th anniversary of independence with everyone. Thank you everyone for your support and enthusiasm!

P.S. We got 2nd place for best float!

What a wonderful group of people to join our Artist in Residence, Alexandra Hansen, for a paint in the park celebrating the country's 250th anniversary.

Participants were encouraged to use their imagination, and each picture came out different. Thank you to all who joined us, and huge thank you to Alexandra for her excitement and enthusiasm for art in the parks!
