Join us for an incredible afternoon of Bossa Nova music at the beautiful Beatrix Farrand Garden at Bellefield. Please feel free to bring food & drink to enjoy during the show.

Bossa Nova, which means “new wave”, is a style of samba music that was developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Through the advent of Bossa Nova, Brazil was able to produce one of the most unique and enduring sounds in the history of Latin music.

Bossa Nova is distinct from other Samba subgenres, as it consists of a mixture of soft samba based on traditional Brazilian music and rhythms, American jazz, and a new style of Portuguese lyrics.

This concert is free and will be a memorable experience for music lovers of all ages.

BOREAL is a band that plays Brazilian Music in New York. With Mariana Barcellos on lead vocals and Gil Oliveira on percussion, both native from Brazil, joined by Timothy Hill on guitar, Steve Gorn on bamboo flutes and Gabriel Dresdale on cello, Boreal plays famous Bossa Nova tunes composed by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, and other inspiring songs from various Brazilian composers.

The “blush, cream, and silver” border is capturing everybody’s hearts this spring. Okay… some of those pinks are looking a little more than blush!
Beatrix Farrand carefully controlled color in her planting designs - in fact this is the only bed in our garden that isn’t really all shades of one color. The giant flower stalks of the yucca - like mammoth asparagus - make for an otherworldly contrast.

Public service announcement : The garden is at peak spring right now with the peonies at full blast! Come stick your nose in a peony! Golden hours of morning and evening are magic right now: )

When your horticulturist is in charge of social media, things can go a bit quiet in May!
But the garden has been aglow despite her lack of selfies. I hope you’ve gotten to come have a glimpse of her awakening into splendor!
I am particularly obsessed with the dark Camassias against the chartreuse fern foliage, the mixture of Tiarella and Dodaecatheon, and the sweet-as-sugar combination of pale blue Amsonia flowers with pink Geum and Pinxterbloom Azalea flowers. The backdrop of Beatrix’s stone walls make any plant look luxurious, and white tree peonies and Aquilegia in the long borders along the dark hedges is absolutely elegance. Come see us!

Comment for any species names you’d like, fellow garden nerds, in May this busy horticulturist has started with genus only!

Spring delights - all in one afternoon at the Beatrix Farrand Garden. We recommend crawling around in the grass to see these little beauties up close.

Note our original wooden doors are being restored as part of the Rejuvenation so getting in the West and East gates is tricky right now. The South gate door is all done and I’m working order!
