Hardware Ranch is a Wildlife Management Area operated by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR). As a Wildlife Management Area, our ranching operations serve to improve big game winter habitat and other critical habitats. Through our work, we responsibly manage wildlife populations and educate the public about Utah’s wildlife. We also facilitate wildlife research and provide public access t
o outdoor recreation. Each winter, we feed the area’s wild elk populations in our meadow. Our feeding operations sustain the elk population through the winter, and keep them from moving into communities and coming into conflict with humans. Visitors in the winter take sleigh rides to view the elk that we feed. Funds raised from winter sleigh rides and sportsman license fees help us grow hay in the summer. It takes about 300 tons of hay to feed the 500 to 600 elk that come to the ranch each winter. All of this furthers our goal of improving big game habitat and wildlife populations. The WMA also has a visitor center with interactive exhibits and programs where the public can learn more about elk and other wildlife. Visitors with fishing licenses can take advantage of the almost 15 miles of fishable streams and rivers on the WMA, and others snowmobile in the area. Comments policy
