Today, we honor U.S. Forest Service firefighter Nathan Matthews, who succumbed to injuries sustained during the Knowles Fire burnover in western Colorado.

Nathan was one of five firefighters involved in the tragic burnover on June 27. He is the fourth firefighter to lose his life following the incident, joining Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson.

We continue to keep all of those affected by this tragedy in our thoughts, including the families, friends, the Rifle Helitack crew, and everyone across the wildland fire community.

Idyllwild Fire Protection District’s Brush 621 is currently assigned as part of Strike Team 6074C supporting the Rock Fire in Inyo County.

The Rock Fire has grown to approximately 5,500 acres and is 5% contained. Our firefighters are working alongside crews from across California to support suppression efforts and help protect lives, property, and natural resources.

Today we celebrate our nation and the freedoms we all cherish. As we gather with family and friends, we also recognize the military members and first responders who help keep our communities safe.

This Independence Day is especially meaningful as Idyllwild Fire Protection District proudly celebrates 80 years of service to our mountain community. Since 1946, generations of firefighters, volunteers, board members, and staff have answered the call to protect lives, property, and the place we call home.

As you celebrate today, please remember that all fireworks including “safe and sane” fireworks are ILLEGAL in Idyllwild and throughout Riverside County. The safest way to celebrate is by enjoying a professional fireworks display from a permitted location.

Thank you for allowing us to serve this incredible community for the past 80 years. Here’s to honoring our past, protecting our future, and wishing everyone a safe and happy Independence Day!

Today, on National Wildland Firefighter Day, we pause to recognize the men and women who answer the call to protect lives, communities, and our natural landscapes. Their work is demanding, often unseen, and requires courage, dedication, and sacrifice.

This year’s observance carries even greater meaning. We honor the memory of the three wildland firefighters who recently lost their lives on the Knowles Fire, and we remember all who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

As we observe the Week of Remembrance, we also reflect on two tragedies that forever shaped the wildland fire community: the 13th anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire, where 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots gave their lives, and the 20th anniversary of the Esperanza Fire, which claimed the lives of five firefighters on Engine 57 - our friends - from the San Bernardino National Forest.

From all of us at Idyllwild Fire Protection District, we honor those we’ve lost, support those still on the line, and remain committed to carrying their legacy forward.

We remember Emily Baker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson, whose dedication, courage, and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten.

Their loss is felt across the fire community. Idyllwild Fire extends our deepest condolences to their families, friends, coworkers, and all those who had the privilege of serving alongside them. Our prayers are with the firefighters recovering from their injuries.

🇺🇸 As we near celebrations for America’s 250th birthday, the Idyllwild Fire Protection District reminds everyone that ALL fireworks are illegal in Riverside County, including “safe and sane” fireworks.

🎆 Leave the fireworks to the professionals and enjoy one of the many public fireworks displays taking place throughout the region (swipe to see authorized locations in Riverside County compiled by CAL FIRE RRU).

Today we recognize the fathers of our firefighters, the dads serving within our fire district, and all fathers throughout our community and beyond.

👧🏻 🐕 Keep kids and pets clear of hot surfaces, open flames, and cooking areas
🕯️ Keep candles away from anything that can burn and never leave them unattended
🚒 🚑 Park responsibly, keeping roads clear for emergency vehicles
