This Thursday we’re looking back at a Memorial Day parade that took place 76 years ago. On May 30, 1950, three bands - including Ilion’s Volunteer Fireman’s band, the Mohawk Drum Corps, and Ilion High School’s band gathered at the corner of Catherine and Main streets along with local veterans and civic groups for a parade that kicked off at 9:00 AM. The parade route followed Main St. to Morgan St., then marched up to Soldiers Monument before turning up Benedict Ave. to Armory Hill Cemetery for a graveside service. Reverend Ernest Brook Pugh of St. Augustine’s Episcopal church in Ilion led the service, and Ilion High school students recited President Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, along with General Order No. 11. Also known as Logan’s Order of the Day, this order issued by General John A. Logan in 1868 dedicated May 30th as a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Known as Decoration Day originally, the idea later morphed into Memorial Day as we know it today. Gold Star mothers – mothers of fallen soldiers, were guests of honor for the service that concluded with a rifle salute before the parade left the cemetery as disbanded at the Ilion Fire Station. The following week, the Ilion Volunteer Fire Dept. held a separate memorial ceremony with a parade of their own. On June 5th they marched from Main St. to Hoefler Ave., then turned down High St. and Armory St. to do a secondary graveside service at Armory Hill Cemetery, where an address was given and the grave of the most recently deceased volunteer fireman was honored before the assembled procession returned to the fire station. The Volunteer Fireman’s separate parade and service followed the return of many residents from their weekend outings, documented in the June 1st headline shown.
