On Friday 9/26 at 4:49pm the Illiopolis Fire Department was paged for smoke in a residence. All occupants and pets had exited the residence safely. Arriving crews found heavy fire in the basement area. Crews worked several hours extinguishing the fire. No injuries were reported to occupants or first responders. Thank you to the mutual aid departments that assisted; Niantic Fire Department, Buffalo Fire Department, Mechanicsburg Fire Department, Dawson Fire Department, LifeStar Ambulance, and the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department.

As fields dry out, the risk of fire increases. Protect your equipment, your crop, and yourself by following these safety tips:

Machine Maintenance & Prevention
✅ Blow off chaff, leaves & debris daily to reduce fuel buildup
✅ Lubricate bearings & chains to prevent overheating
✅ Inspect wiring & connections for damage
✅ Check tires for cracks or wear

On-Field Safety
🔥 Carry at least two fire extinguishers—one in the cab & one accessible from the ground
📞 Have a plan to call 911 immediately if a fire starts—don’t delay
🚜 Keep a tractor with a disk in a safe location, ready to help stop a spreading fire

This morning at 2:10am the Illiopolis Fire department was dispatched to a residential structure fire. Upon arrival crews were faced with heavy fire and partial roof collapse on the rear of the residence. Crews worked on extinguishing the fire for 5 hours.
Thank you to Buffalo and Niantic Fire departments for the assistance.

As we head into the spring weather season, remember that weather can be unpredictable and can change fast.

Please utilize local weather stations, phone apps, or other weather alert devices. Do not solely rely on the Tornado siren as your only alert system. Tornado sirens are typically used to warn those who are outside, not indoors. Follow warnings when they are issued for our area and be prepared to act.
