The sands of time have a way of covering up the past if you let it. January 12, 1961, just after 4pm was the beginning of an ill fated night that we at Station Cape Disappointment will never forget. 6 crew members on the Motor Lifeboat Triumph I went out, only one came back.

After a long fulfilling life, the lone surviving crewmember, Gordon E. Huggins, rejoined his shipmates in March of 2019. He and his shipmates fulfilled a legacy that we as a station and a service will forever be grateful for. Semper Paratus.

In loving memory of the souls lost on Triumph I and F/V Mermaid.

The other crews were the 41332 which lost a crew doing night navigation training. And MK1 Charles Sexton of the NMLBS who was lost trying to dewater the Sea King when it capsized during a case.

Training on Benson Beach is always a blast. Energy comes from multiple directions, and even a small buoy can create a great training environment for our crews. Watch out for the last wave in this series, it's a doozy!

Today we say goodbye to some of our most impactful members at the cape.

Fn Henry your impact at the station has been felt. Through your hard work and dedication you were selected as the district sailor of the quarter. We wish you luck as you move on to your next unit

Sn Lawrence as a senior nonrate you have done more than as expected of you in your time at the unit. We wish you the best of luck as you travel to BM A school. There is no doubt you’ll make a great boatswain mate

CREED of the United States SURFMAN

I will to the best of my ability, pursue each
mission with the commitment, compassion,
and courage inherent in the title
"SURFMAN."

I will endeavor to reinforce the worldwide
reputation of our forefathers in the
Lifeboat Community.

I will maintain a guardian's eye on my crew
at all times, and keep a cool, yet
deliberate, hand on the throttle.

I will give of myself and my knowledge as
those who gave to me; so as the line
of Coast Guard Surfman will live forever.

I will ensure that my supervisors rest easy
with the knowledge that I am at the
helm, no matter what the conditions.

I will never unnecessarily jeopardize myself,
my boat, or my crew; but will do so freely
to rescue those in peril.

I will strive with dedication and determination
to bring credit upon Coast Guard Surfmen
past and future
