FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On May 23, 2026, at approximately 1:45 a.m., Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Ernest Brown American Legion, located at 1607 Highway 75 in Caney, Kansas, just north of the U.S. Highway 166 and U.S. Highway 75 junction, in reference to a disturbance involving a fight and a possible stabbing.
Upon arrival, deputies began gathering information from multiple witnesses at the scene. Montgomery County Detectives were notified and responded to assist with the investigation. During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that at least one individual sustained injuries consistent with being cut by a sharp object. The injured individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

It has been brought to our attention that false information regarding this investigation is being circulated on social media. We are also aware of allegations involving City of Caney employees allegedly being present at the location that evening. At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing and is being conducted solely by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Division. The Caney Police Department is not involved in this investigation.

Sheriff Ron Wade stated, “We ask the public to refrain from spreading false information regarding this investigation and allow detectives the opportunity to complete a thorough and impartial investigation. This remains an active investigation, and no further information will be released at this time.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On May 22, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Independence Police Dispatch was notified by an Independence Fire/EMS unit of a two-vehicle injury accident at U.S. Highway 169 and County Road 4800, approximately one mile south of Cherryvale, Kansas. Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies, the Kansas Highway Patrol - Troop H, and several additional emergency response agencies responded to the scene.

During the investigation, deputies determined that a 2017 Buick Enclave, driven by Hurshel Miller of Independence, Kansas, was stopped at the stop sign facing westbound before entering U.S. Highway 169. A 2013 Ford Expedition, driven by Dana Smith of Elmore, Oklahoma, was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 169 when it struck the Buick as it entered the highway. Both vehicles came to rest in the west ditch along U.S. Highway 169.

Hurshel Miller and his passenger, Sharon Miller, were airlifted to an area trauma center with critical injuries. Mrs. Smith and one of the three juveniles traveling with her were transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.
Deputies later learned that Mr. Miller succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Sheriff Ron Wade stated, “We want to extend our thoughts and prayers to the Miller family. It is never easy to lose a loved one, especially so suddenly in a motor vehicle accident. We also ask the public to keep both the Miller and Smith families in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Sheriff Wade also asked the public to refrain from spreading unverified information on social media and to respect the privacy of both families as they grieve.

The accident remains under investigation. No additional information will be released at this time.
