Polk County Fire District No.1 is a combination career/volunteer organization consisting of four (4) fire stations providing service to approximately 25,000 people living within the 185 square mile region of SE Polk and SW Marion counties in Oregon.

Calling all young artists! In celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States, Polk County Fire District No. 1 is sponsoring a July 4th Art Contest for students in grades K-12.

This year’s theme is: What does the 4th of July mean to you? Entries may include drawings, paintings, collages, poems, or writing, with age divisions for K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. First-place prize baskets will be awarded in each age group.

Entries are due by June 9, and winners will be notified on June 12. Projects can be submitted at Polk County Fire, 1800 Monmouth St. in Independence, or through local school offices.

Winning artwork will be displayed during Polk County Fire’s annual July 4 Pancake Breakfast on July 4 from 6 to 10 a.m. Questions? Email [email protected]

Thanks to a $2,500 Safety and Wellness Grant from the Pacific Power Foundation, Polk Fire has purchased portable thermal imaging cameras to strengthen early fire detection and improve firefighter safety.

These cameras allow crews to detect heat and identify hidden fire threats that may not be visible to the naked eye. Additionally, thermal imaging cameras are also critical for search and rescue, helping firefighters locate people through smoke, darkness, and other low-visibility conditions.

Polk Fire is grateful for the Pacific Power Foundation’s investment in community safety and support of our first responders.

Polk Fire is partnering with the American Red Cross for a community blood drive on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Polk County Fire Community Room (1800 Monmouth St. in Independence).

Every donation can help save lives and support patients in need right here in our region. Donors who give blood May 18–31 will also receive an exclusive Red Cross beach towel while supplies last.

During April 2026, our volunteers and staff spent 1,121 hours in training. Additionally, we had 322 calls for service throughout the month.

In honor of our Nation’s 250th birthday, we want to help ensure every flagpole in our District is ready to proudly fly the Stars and Stripes this July 4th!

As part of that effort, our firefighters will be spending extra time training with our ladder truck on Flag Day (June 14). If you have a flagpole that needs light maintenance, such as a new halyard (rope), a new topper, or other simple repairs that are difficult to safely reach, we’d love to help.

You provide the materials, and we’ll provide the reach. Our firefighters will coordinate with you and work to make sure your flag is ready to fly high this Independence Day.

Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, we want to take a moment to recognize our Polk Fire crews.

This work demands long hours, time away from family, constant training, and the willingness to step into situations most people run from. Yet you continue to show up, for each other and for our community.

We deeply appreciate your dedication and your service to our district and Polk County.

During March 2026, our volunteers and career staff spent 1,686 hours in training. Additionally, we had 325 calls for service throughout the month.

Just after 3:00 p.m. today, Polk Fire was dispatched to a reported house fire at the north end of Independence. Firefighters arrived to find a single-wide manufactured home with flames and smoke visible. Our crews quickly initiated fire attack and brought the fire under control at approximately 3:28 p.m.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries or deaths were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene where an individual was transported to the hospital for a non-fire-related issue.

Polk Fire extends its thanks to the Polk County Sheriff's Office and SW Polk Fire District for their assistance in this incident.
