The Independence Board of Aldermen appointed Luke Suarez police chief during a special meeting Thursday night to replace former chief Frank Edwards III, who retired earlier this month. The aldermen also adopted a resolution to call a special election to permanently fill the position. The primary is scheduled Oct. 9, 2027, and if needed a runoff will be held Nov. 20, 2027.
