What does “digging line” mean? ⛏️

One of the most important parts of wildland firefighting is creating fireline — clearing vegetation and digging down to bare mineral soil to help stop a fire from spreading. Crews use hand tools to cut a containment line that can slow, redirect, or fully stop advancing fire.

It’s hard, physical work, but it plays a huge role in protecting land, homes, and communities.

Not all the work happens during the flames 🔥

These crews are building water bars along dozer line—small, angled trenches that help redirect water off the line. why? because without them, rain can turn fire lines into erosion channels, washing out soil and undoing the hard work that went into containment.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—and in this line of work, it matters more than most 🧠🔥

Wildland firefighting is physically demanding, but the mental load can be just as heavy. Long shifts, high-stress environments, time away from home, and the things you see on the line… they don’t just turn off when the shift ends.

Taking care of your mental health isn’t a weakness—it’s part of being a strong, reliable crew member. Checking in with your team, talking about what you’re carrying, and making space to reset are just as important as any tool in your pack.

At ASI, we stand behind our crews on and off the fireline. You’re not in this alone 🤝

Wildland firefighting is as much mental as it is physical 🧭

Navigation and mapping skills are critical for safety, strategy, and communication on the fireline. Crews are trained to read topographic maps, use compass bearings, and integrate GPS data to track movement, identify hazards, and plan access + escape routes.

They’re also constantly interpreting terrain—ridges, drainages, slope, and aspect—all of which directly influence fire behavior.

It’s this level of situational awareness that allows crews to operate effectively and make informed decisions in rapidly changing conditions.

Out on assignment with Crew 1 and a little community love goes a long way 🔥

Huge thank you to the local BBQ spot for the warm welcome, sweet treats, and asking to snap a crew photo. Moments like this remind us how strong the support is behind our firefighters.

We appreciate you 👏
