Congratulations to Jim Gilpin on being named as interim chief of police of the Kenton County Police Department. Thank you to all who serve to keep our communities safe!

On Tuesday, the Kenton County Fiscal Court approved Jim Gilpin as interim chief of the Kenton County Police Department, positioning a longtime KCPD leader to guide the agency through its upcoming transition.

Gilpin will succeed Chief Michael “Spike” Jones, who will depart the department on Friday, Sept. 11, after 11 years as chief.

A veteran of KCPD, Gilpin rejoined the department in January 2024 as assistant chief after retiring in 2019. He previously spent 20 years with the agency, rising through the ranks before being promoted to captain in 2015.

Gilpin’s appointment will provide continuity for the department as the County begins its search for Jones’ permanent successor.

During Tuesday’s Fiscal Court meeting, County Administrator Joe Shriver outlined the process for filling the position permanently. Applications are expected to open in mid-September, with the County targeting the end of October to complete the search and appoint a new chief.

After a hard-fought series of votes in the U.S. Congress and in state legislatures, the Nineteenth Amendment became part of the U.S. Constitution on August 18, 1920.[19] It states:

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of s*x."

Thank you to the women who came before us who fought this battle. Their activism helped paved the way for people like me to serve those who elect us! I am grateful!

Good information for residents from the City of Taylor Mill regarding storm debris disposal. Please take a moment to review the Storm Debris Removal Flyer for proper disposal of debris from your property. Pickup is August 17th!

For Taylor Mill residents, the city will collect debris from branches and trees resulting from the recent storm. Please have your yard debris at the curbside by 8 am on Monday, August 17, 2026. Please take a moment to review the Storm Debris Collection Flyer for proper disposal of yard debris. Public Works has a lot of area to cover, and following these guidelines will greatly support their efforts.

So many of us are dealing with branches down and debris after these storms. As always, stay safe and treat any downed power line as live.

Here's some good information for Kenton County residents to help dispose of debris...

We know many throughout Kenton County will spend the coming days cleaning up fallen limbs, but those downed branches don't have to pile up in your yard. All Kenton County residents are eligible to participate in our monthly 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗩𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺, which allows you to get rid of bulky items, including yard debris, for FREE at Bavarian Waste in Walton.

Here's what you need to know:
👉 Sign up online through CivicRec at https://bit.ly/KCVoucherApp
👉 Apply for a voucher (don’t forget your trash bill!).
👉 Once approved, head to Bavarian Waste, located at 12764 McCoys Fork Road in Walton, Monday–Saturday to drop off your items.

NOTE: Only 200 vouchers are available each month, so don't wait. Each household can claim one voucher a month (up to 10 per year).

Honored to serve with these fine people in the Kentucky House of Representatives!

Kentucky's fiscal year ended on June 30 with a $320 million budget surplus.

What creates a budget surplus? It's not bigger government, more spending, or manufacturing crises designed to grab headlines despite hurting people.

It's trusting Kentuckians to keep more of the money they earn. It's supporting workers and employers so our economy can grow. It's meeting the Commonwealth's most important needs while making strategic investments in programs that deliver real results.

It's also taking a hard look at how government operates to find efficiencies, make programs work better, and eliminate those that are outdated, duplicative, or no longer serve the people they were created to help.

At its core, a surplus comes from responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars and a commitment to effective governing. It comes from remembering that state government exists to serve the people of Kentucky and not the other way around.

Leading Kentucky takes the hard work of good government, and we're grateful to our leadership, House Appropriations and Revenue Chair Jason Petrie, KY Representative, vice chairs Rep.
