It is with great sadness that we must announce the cancellation of our 2026 National Night Out event, which was scheduled for Tuesday, August 4, in Independence.

The Virginia Primary Elections will be held that day at Grayson County High School. In order to avoid any conflicts with the Board of Elections and to ensure a smooth voting process, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year's event.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and continued support. We look forward to seeing everyone next year for an even bigger and better National Night Out!

The Town of Independence is proud to announce the 2026 Parade Grand Marshall - Dan Thornton

Mr. Thornton has lived in the Town of Independence for 70 years. He joined the Independence Volunteer Fire Department in 1964 and is still an honorary member today. Mr. Thornton served as the Fire Chief for 12 years. When asked what makes Independence home, he shared that, “it is a good place to raise your family, people are friendly and helpful, and they take pride in their Town.”

Thank you, Mr. Thornton, for your dedication to our Town and your service to our fire department. Mr. Thornton will be escorted in the Parade on July 4th by our Town Mayor, Mr. Mark Miller!

Town Office & the Independence DMV Select will be closed on Friday July 3, 2026 in observance of the 4th of July holiday.
The office will re open on Monday July 6, 2026 with normal business hours of 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
