Earlier this week, the Kenton County Police Department celebrated 104 years of service. As a result, we're taking the opportunity to spotlight one of the officers helping carry that legacy forward.

Meet Officer Austin Kuehn, our June Employee Spotlight. From patrolling Kenton County's roads to serving as one of the department's drone pilots, Austin embodies the dedication, professionalism and commitment to service that have defined KCPD for more than a century.

This photo takes us back to August 1981, when Det. Joe Schmiade was investigating a local bank robbery. It shows him collecting fingerprints left behind on the stolen getaway van.

Take a closer look and you'll notice two interesting details: a wig on the floorboard and a screwdriver still in the ignition, both left behind by the suspect.

Crime scene investigations may have changed over the years, but it holds true that every piece of evidence counts.

Our officers are required to complete Certified First Responder training, which means they're prepared to provide lifesaving care before EMS arrives. That's why every cruiser is equipped with a fully stocked medical bag containing oxygen, airway management equipment, bleeding control supplies and much more.

While we serve the entire County, our primary service area is unincorporated Kenton County, where some emergencies occur in areas that can take longer for responding agencies to reach. Having officers trained and equipped to provide immediate medical care helps keep patients stable until our EMS partners arrive.

It was a great weekend at the 31st Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games at EKU!

Thank you to Special Olympics Kentucky for having us. We enjoyed cheering on the athletes, celebrating their hard work and seeing the incredible sportsmanship on display throughout the weekend.

From January through March 2026, our Law Enforcement Navigators continued to serve as a vital resource for residents in need of support. Take a look at this graphic to see our first-quarter impact by the numbers.

While sworn officers handle immediate safety concerns, Navigators provide follow-up assistance by connecting individuals and families with services such as mental health care, substance use treatment, housing and shelter resources and other community supports.

Today, members of the Kenton County Police Department joined forces with our friends from The City of Independence, Kentucky for the Kentucky Law Enforcement Torch Run held in honor of the Special Olympics. Together, we carried the "Flame of Hope" from our KCPD headquarters to Simon Kenton High School.

This local leg is part of the broader 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run events leading up to the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games, which draw over 1,000 athletes to Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

🚓 Our 2026 Special Olympics Torch Run cruiser is ready to hit the road! 🚓

These awesome graphics were recently added to Officer Thomas Britton’s patrol vehicle by Street Art Kustoms in support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Kentucky.

On June 3, our officers will join Special Olympians for a local leg of the Torch Run, carrying the Flame of Hope from KCPD Headquarters to Simon Kenton High School and back. This event helps raise awareness for Special Olympics athletes and celebrates the power of inclusion, determination and community.

The 2026 Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games return to Eastern Kentucky University for it's 31st year beginning June 5. The full schedule for the games can be found at soky.org/summergames/

In 2024, the fatality rate for motorcyclists was 27 times higher than for passenger vehicle occupants.

With summer finally here, we’re seeing more motorcycles out enjoying the warm weather. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a car or on a bike, we all play a role in keeping each other safe.

Drivers: Give motorcycles extra space and stay alert. Motorcyclists may need to brake or maneuver quickly to avoid hazards.

Motorcyclists: Wear a helmet, follow traffic laws and never ride distracted.

As Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month comes to a close, we want to remind everyone to look twice and help save a life.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and one of the biggest needs we've seen through our Law Enforcement Navigator program is access to mental health services.

In this video, Jessica Green, one of our four Law Enforcement Navigators, explains how the team connects residents with the care and resources they need. Because every situation is different, each person receives individualized support to help find the community partner that best fit their needs.

But assistance doesn't end there. The LENs follow up with clients to make sure their needs are being met, checking on if they have transportation to appointments, what health care coverage they have and anything else they need to receive the help they deserve.
