Students are getting ready for summer adventures by learning more about our neighbors, the American Black Bears!

We partnered with the fine folks from Conservation Northwest and Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife to understand how to react to different bear encounters, as well as how to keep our homes (and campsites) bear-wise. WDFW also brought along educational tools (black bear pelt, skull replica, and track casts) for students to connect deeper with bears.

Want to learn more about how to be BearWise ? Check out their website or give โ€˜em a follow.

Index Elementary students are continuing their study of plant systems by focusing on soil. We took a closer look at abiotic soil elements, and encouraged students to wonder. Where do rocks come from? How are they created? What are some characteristics we can observe? Students gathered river rocks to paint and beautify our garden plot. The Soper Family assisted in the harvesting of local glacial clay, which students processed to create leaf imprints of local flora. Our clay harvest site is shown in the posted photo.

Oh, and that rad waterfowl in the beginning of the video? When students arrived at the North Fork of the Skykomish River, a male Harlequin Duck was there to greet us! Magic!

Nature Class is brought to the school through a partnership with Friends of Heybrook Ridge and is supported by the North American Association for Environmental Education - NAAEE - NAAEE - NAAEE CEE Change Fellowship.
