Register now for the largest coastal cleanup event of the year! Each year, volunteers gather at Sebastian Inlet's tide pool to remove dangerous plastics, cigarette butts, monofilament fishing line and other trash to protect marine life at the inlet and keep our coast clean. Who is this dapper man who dares to fish while wearing a necktie? It's Spessard Lindsey Holland. His name adorns a golf course and two beach parks here in south Brevard County. He served as the 28th governor of Florida from 1941 to 1945, and as a U.S. senator for Florida from 1946 to 1971. He was also the first person born in Florida to serve as governor and U.S. senator for the state. We don't have an ID on his companion. The waters of Sebastian Inlet can be flat, calm and gin-clear in summer, an ideal time to catch a glimpse of magnificent marine life here. We recorded this spotted eagle ray last summer while at the north jetty. Manatees, dolphins, sharks and a seemingly endless variety of fish species are also regulars at the inlet. We've launched a pilot project in an effort to reduce boat strikes in the Sebastian Inlet channel. In addition to repairing channel markers Red 18 and Red 26, we've installed 50 small solar lights on all wood pile channel markers. (A solar light is visible below Marker 18 in this photo).

Channel markers take a beating. Theyโ€™re exposed to a ceaseless onslaught of pounding waves, corrosive saltwater, searing UV rays and acidic bird guano. Most of the markers are fixed on posts in the water; a few are numbered floating buoys secured by Dor-Mor anchors.

When the District receives reports of downed or missing markers, the agency is quick to respond.

โ€œAs a navigation district, our charter identifies safe navigation as one of our critical functions,โ€ says Sebastian Inlet District Executive Director James Gray. โ€œOur agreement with the Coast Guard authorizing us to maintain the markers also means we are responsible for replacing them when they become damaged or go missing.โ€

Channel markers help prevent boaters from veering from the deeper water and into the nearby shallows that can damage propellers, but they also help protect the Sebastian Inlet shoals on the west side of the bridge. Seagrass beds on the shoals harbor shrimp, blue crabs and juvenile fish. Seagrasses are vitally important to the health of these species and to predators relying on them for food.

Flashback Friday: This photo included a description that reads, "Rough seas stop work on the north jetty, 1968." This project was a complete overhaul and 500-foot extension of the north jetty by Cleary Brothers Construction Co. of West Palm Beach to incorporate the crib structure seen today. The project was immediately followed by an extension and cap for the south jetty. This work would extend into 1970. www.sitd.us/the-history-of-sebastian-inlet

Our quarterly volunteer cleanup events and the annual International Coastal Cleanup event provide the public with an opportunity to show their love for Sebastian Inlet.
