Flashback Friday - Sebastian Inlet, from the air, as it looked in 1970. Sebastian Inlet State Park was established on August 12, 1970, after the State of Florida acquired the land, with development beginning in the early 1970s. Here, one can see the fish camps that were removed for the creation of the park. Our agency, the Sebastian Inlet District, predates the park by 51 years. www.sitd.us/the-history-of-sebastian-inlet

Happy 107th birthday, Sebastian Inlet District! It's cake day! In May 23, 1919, the Sebastian Inlet District was formed with a charter of maintaining the navigational channel connecting the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean.

About a year after the District was established - August 31, 1920 - the District was granted a permit to dig which would remain valid until December 31, 1923. The inlet was once again opened in June of 1923 at its current location and small jetties were completed using coquina rock carried on barges and transported by a Model T Ford converted by Roy O. Couch. www.sitd.us/the-history-of-sebastian-inlet

Flashback Friday: An aerial view of the the renovations that occurred at Sebastian Inlet's north jetty in 2002-03, including an elevated concrete cap, handrails and a grate system. By November of 2002, the Sebastian Inlet District had completed a multi-year, five-phase sediment bypass project that placed more than 200,000 cubic yards of sand on beaches south of Sebastian Inlet. www.sitd.us/the-history-of-sebastian-inlet

National Safe Boating Week (May 16-22) is underway. To that end, the National Safe Boating Council and U.S. Coast Guard highlight the following critical statistics as of early 2026:

- Leading Cause of Death: Drowning remains the primary cause of death in 76% to 81% of recreational boating fatalities.
- Life Jacket Usage: Of those who drowned, 87% were not wearing a life jacket.
- Swimming Ability: Two-thirds of drowning victims identified as "good swimmers," reinforcing that life jackets are essential for everyone.
- Fatal Accident Factors: Alcohol use is estimated to be a factor in one-third of all boating fatalities.

Sun’s out, sea turtles are nesting, and life is GOOD at Sebastian Inlet State Park.

Grab a Beach Basket on your next walk and help keep this iconic Florida State Park clean by collecting any marine debris you may find.
(P.S. - you might also discover some awesome shells to admire during low tide!)

These Beach Basket stations within the state parks of Sebastian Inlet, Avalon, and Fort Pierce Inlet, are proudly supported by Florida State Parks and Surfing’s Evolution & Preservation Foundation.

National Safe Boating Week begins today! The Safe Boating Campaign is a global awareness effort that encourages boaters to make the most of their boating adventure by being responsible.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three out of every four recreational boating fatalities, and that 87 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.

There are many options for boaters when it comes to choosing a life jacket. When selecting a life jacket, a boater should check that it is U.S. Coast Guard approved, appropriate for the water activity, and fits properly.

We will share Safe Boating Tips throughout this week. Stay tuned!
