Hot and humid is the daily forecast, but that didn't prevent about a dozen volunteers from removing approximately 34 pounds of trash this morning (June 23) from the tide pool beach at Sebastian Inlet State Park. They removed the usual cigarette butts, monofilament and bottle caps, but the microplastics were everywhere, particularly in the sargassum washed up on the shoreline. Thanks to the volunteers, our friends at the state park and of course, Coastal Connections, Inc., for another successful quarterly cleanup event. We hope to see more of you in September! Flashback Friday: The March 2, 1945, edition of the Vero Beach Press Journal announces that the U.S. Navy was assisting in the reopening of Sebastian Inlet, which had been closed years earlier by storms that filled the inlet mouth with sand. Flashback Friday: An aerial of Sebastian Inlet, looking east toward the Atlantic Ocean, in 1958. No fishing museum, no snack bar, no campground, no parking lots. Not even a state park yet. The Sebastian Inlet District was established 39 years earlier, in 1919.
