The final weeks of summer are here, and Labor Day weekend will soon bring road trips, cookouts, community events, and one last long summer weekend for many families.

As you make your plans, make one simple decision before you ever leave the driveway:

The Indian Head Park Police Department is participating in the statewide Labor Day Occupant Protection enforcement campaign now through 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟳, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

During the campaign, officers will increase traffic enforcement, emphasizing seat belt and occupant protection violations.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿

A crash can happen on a highway, a neighborhood street, or just a few blocks from home. Wearing a seat belt remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.

Drivers can help make this Labor Day travel period safer by remembering a few basics:

• Buckle up and make sure every passenger is properly restrained
• Put the phone away and stay focused on the road
• Obey posted speed limits
• Never drive impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs
• Plan for a sober ride before the celebration begins

Traffic enforcement campaigns are about more than citations. They are about visibility, awareness, and encouraging the everyday choices that help prevent crashes and save lives.

Enjoy the final weeks of summer. Celebrate Labor Day safely. And make sure everyone gets home.

Need to park a vehicle on the street overnight? Whether it belongs to you, a family member, or a guest visiting your home, the easiest and most reliable way to request overnight parking is through the Village’s 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺.

The system is available from your phone or computer and takes only a few minutes to complete. More importantly, it ensures that all of the information our officers need, including the vehicle, license plate, parking location, and dates, is entered directly into the system.

𝗪𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿. Our officers work different shifts and assignments, and simply telling an officer that a vehicle will be parked overnight does not ensure that all of the necessary information has been entered.

When you submit the request online, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲.

• Overnight parking is prohibited on Village streets from 𝟮:𝟬𝟬 𝗮.𝗺. 𝘁𝗼 𝟲:𝟬𝟬 𝗮.𝗺.

• Each vehicle is allowed a maximum of 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵.

• Following a snowfall of 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲, all street parking is prohibited, and overnight parking permissions are automatically void.

• Overnight parking permission does not exempt a vehicle from any other Village parking regulations.

𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 — 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁

We've all encountered a long line of vehicles traveling together with their headlights on as family and friends accompany a loved one to their final resting place.

But do you know what you're supposed to do when you encounter a funeral procession?

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝘀

Under Illinois law, a funeral procession has the right-of-way at an intersection when the vehicles in the procession have their headlights illuminated.

The lead vehicle must obey traffic signals and stop signs. Once the lead vehicle lawfully enters the intersection, however, the vehicles following in the procession may continue through the intersection without stopping, including when a traffic signal changes, provided they exercise due caution.

There are exceptions. A funeral procession must yield to approaching emergency vehicles and follow the directions of a police officer.

Illinois law also prohibits motorists from driving into a funeral procession unless directed to do so by a police officer. And no, you can't simply turn on your headlights, join the line, and take advantage of the procession's right-of-way.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁.

A funeral procession isn't simply a slow-moving line of cars. Inside those vehicles are people accompanying a family member, friend, neighbor, or loved one on their final journey.

If you encounter a procession, slow down, give it room, and allow the procession to remain together. When appropriate and safe, pulling over and allowing the procession to pass is a simple gesture of respect.

Most importantly, 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗿𝘆.

Those few extra moments probably won't make much difference in your day. To the family traveling together behind a hearse, however, a little patience and consideration can mean something.

Sometimes good driving isn't just about following the rules of the road. It's also about looking out for the people sharing it with you.

The Indian Head Park Police Department recently completed its July Speed Awareness enforcement campaign as part of a statewide effort to reduce speeding and improve roadway safety.

• 53 Total Traffic Stops
• 36 Speeding Citations
• 5 Tinted Window Citations
• 3 Seat Belt Citations
• 3 Expired Plate Citations
• 2 Cellphone Citations
• 1 No Front Plate Citation
• 1 Cannabis Possession Citation
• 1 Arrest for Driving While License Suspended

𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀:

• 3 Speeding
• 2 Suspended Registration
• 1 Expired Registration
• 1 Cellphone Violation

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗘𝗔𝗡𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬

Speeding was by far the most common violation encountered during this enforcement period, accounting for 36 citations.

The faster a vehicle is traveling, the less time a driver has to recognize a hazard, react, and stop. Higher speeds also increase the severity of a crash when one occurs.

Traffic enforcement campaigns like this are about more than citations. They are about visibility, awareness, and encouraging safer driving habits that protect everyone using our roads.

Emergencies don’t always come with much warning. Make sure the Indian Head Park Police Department can reach you when important information needs to get out.

RAVE Alert / Smart911 is the Village’s emergency notification system, and registration is free.

𝗥𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧𝗦 can send important community and public safety notifications directly to you by text message, phone call, or email. Notifications may include severe weather, road closures, water main breaks, power outages, and other public safety emergencies.

𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗧𝟵𝟭𝟭 allows you to create a secure Safety Profile containing information that may help 9-1-1 and first responders during an emergency. You decide what information to provide, which can include your address, household members, emergency contacts, medical information, and other important details.

That information can be especially valuable if you are unable to communicate everything a dispatcher or first responder needs to know during an emergency.

If you were previously registered with the Village’s Simplicity alert system, you still need to register for RAVE Alert / Smart911. Your previous registration did not automatically transfer.

🇺🇸 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 | 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗔 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧!

On Tuesday, August 4, Indian Head Park came together at Blackhawk Park for our fourth annual National Night Out, and we truly could not have asked for a better evening.

Beautiful weather, a great turnout, and a park filled with families, neighbors, first responders, community organizations, and friends made this year’s event one to remember.

🚁 One of the highlights was the return of the Air Methods Lifestar Chicago helicopter. The crew remained on the ground for well over an hour, allowing families to see the helicopter up close, step inside, and visit with the flight crew. We were also treated to a flyover by the Chicago Police Department/Cook County Sheriff’s Police task force helicopter, which made several passes over Blackhawk Park.

🚤 U.S. Coast Guard Station Chicago returned with its 29-foot response boat, while our Touch-A-Truck area gave kids and families an up-close look at some of the vehicles and equipment used by those who serve our communities.

Plenty was happening throughout the park, including a magician, a live reptile show, inflatables, music from our DJ, and one of this year’s new additions: face painting. Judging by the seemingly endless line, we’d say that one was a hit!

🍕🌮🍦 And, of course, there was plenty to eat. Attendees enjoyed free ice cream, hot Mexican fare from our food truck, along with pizza, Italian beef sandwiches, sliders, and more.

🔭 Another new addition this year took National Night Out beyond sunset. A local astronomer joined us with high-powered telescopes, allowing attendees to explore both the daytime and nighttime skies. Even after our outdoor showing of 𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗟-𝗘 ended around 10 p.m., people stayed behind for one last look through the telescopes and into the night sky.

But National Night Out has never been just about helicopters, trucks, food, or entertainment.

It’s about bringing people together.

It’s an opportunity for our officers to meet residents outside of a call for service, for children to interact with first responders in a positive and welcoming environment, and for neighbors to spend an evening together simply enjoying the community we share.

Four National Night Out events down, and each year, this event continues to grow.
