Yesterday, we finally took delivery of our new engine. Engine 8-2 is a 2026 Pierce Enforcer that will serve our community for many years to come. The process to purchase this engine started just about four years ago. Our members will conduct training and work to prepare the unit for service. We plan to place it in service in the next 30 days.

Last night, three of our members were recognized for their achievements with the Charles County High School Cadet program. Kamryn Massey completed the EMS class. With a rigorous curriculum and countless hours of study and ride-alongs outside of class, Kam successfully earned her National Registry EMT and was recognized for one of the Top 5 grades in the class.

Ryan Martin completed the Firefighter 1 program and is currently working towards Firefighter 2.

Carter Rager completed the Firefighter 1 and Hazardous Materials programs, and is currently working towards Firefighter 2. Carter was recognized for having the top grades in the Fire Program and was awarded the Scott Justin Hutchinson Memorial Scholarship.

Kamryn and Ryan will both soon graduate high school. Carter will return to the program next year to complete the EMS class.

Congratulations to all of the cadets. They all have bright futures ahead.

On Thursday evening, our crew was alerted to a collision on Port To***co Road near Durham Pointe Place. Rescue Squad 8 and PA8 responded. Upon arrival, the squad located a single vehicle collision with an occupant trapped. Engine 83 responded to assist. The roof was removed from the vehicle to gain access to the occupant. He was then transported to an area trauma center by PA8.

Upon return to the station, our crew resumed the regularly scheduled extrication training for the week.

On May 19, 1951, thanks to the work of a small group of dedicated men and women in Marbury and the surrounding areas, the Tenth District Volunteer Fire Department was incorporated. In the early years of the department, there were several buildings that we operated out of until the first “large” station on Bicknell Road.

As the county developed, the leadership saw the need to move the station to the Pisgah area to better serve the growing population to the east. In the early 90s, the department moved to the current location on Poorhouse Road. Our department continued to expand and soon we outgrew the station. After years of planning, an addition and renovation began on our building in 2013. That project finished about 2.5 years later, which is our current building.

From the initial concept of the station providing fire suppression services to the community, our abilities have expanded. In addition to fire suppression, we now provide heavy rescue services, open water rescue, surface water and ice rescue, basic life support, inaccessible terrain rescue, wildland fire suppression, and coverage to any other emergency that we are sent to. The department now owns and operates 19 pieces of apparatus out of our station.

Through the years, the fire service and our community have seen many changes. Buildings, apparatus, and technology have all changed greatly in the past 75 years. There’s one thing that has remained constant: the Tenth District Volunteer Fire Department was build by proud, dedicated volunteers. While the names and faces of our people may change, our volunteer pride and unwavering dedication to our community will always be strong.

The pictures below show a bit of our past (historic apparatus and members; the first house siren that alerted our members to responses), as well as a glimpse at our future (our new Engine 8-2 photographed by Dustin Weese as it headed to Maryland from the factory in Wisconsin).

Please join us in celebrating 75 years of amazing service to the citizens of Charles County.
