Check out OSMC’s Women's War Memorial page

A few years ago, in collaboration with Dorothy Pennachio, OSMC erected a monument dedicated to remembering the contributions of women to the Revolutionary War effort and to military actions since then. Dorothy built its page and has regularly been posting ongoing information regarding extraordinary women who have had a role in military actions going forward. It is hoped that the facts will inform future generations of the extraordinary efforts of those brave and patriotic women. OSMC’s monument is one of eight extant in South Carolina. Please visit the Women's War Memorial page at https://www.facebook.com/OSMCwomenmemorial.
OSMC will have a table at the March 21st “Remembering the Ladies” event at the Museum of the Waxhaws, Waxhaw, NC. There will be printed copies of women’s contributions to war efforts for distribution.

OSMC now has an official logo!

Thank you to Amanda Richard of the Marvin Historical Society, Inc. for the suggestion and the design of the below logo. Amanda and the MHS are an example of the purpose of the recently formed Waxhaw Museum “History Group.”
Meagan Plyler, board member of the Waxhaw Museum, organized the History Group, which meets quarterly to support and assist one another with our individual historic preservation projects.
The OSMC logo will be printed in white lettering on a green cloth for events OSMC will participate in.

On Saturday, March 21st, the Museum of the Waxhaws will be hosting an event honoring “Women in History”. Old Six Mile Cemetery will have a manned exhibit at the occasion featuring OSMC’s memorial monument to women who served in the American Revolution. OSMC’s monument is only one of eight in the state of South Carolina.
Also at OSMC’s exhibit at the event will be articles about just a few of the many interesting and true stories of women's participation not only in America’s fight for independence, but also about their bravery throughout history to advance freedom. Come and enjoy the day’s events, and stop by OSMC’s table to say hello to Jerry Marcus, founder and docent of OSMC . The museum will be open to visitors during the “Women in History” event. Did You Know?
What is presently known as Old Six Mile Cemetery has a history going back to the first settlers in the Indian Land, SC, area. At that time, it was situated on what was called the Old Wagon Road, presently known as Henry Harris Rd. It is thought that OSMC and the Six Mile Creek meeting house probably originated in the late 1600s or early 1700s. OSMC was first known as the Six Mile Community Cemetery, then Morrow Cemetery, then Six Mile Creek Cemetery, and finally Old Six Mile Cemetery.

Col. John William Hagins, Commander of the Mecklenburg and Six Mile Creek Militia at the Battle of Hanging Rock, founded the Six Mile Creek Presbyterian Church in 1765. At that time it was situated on the east side of the Old Wagon Road, but it burned down about 1804.

The church was moved and rebuilt at the present site of Faith Presbyterian Church, across from the intersection of Hwy 521 and Van Wyck Rd, Indian Land. Allen Morrow (son of Susannah and John Morrow, who are both buried in OSMC) donated the land for the original church building on the site of Faith Presbyterian Church. He also provided the lumber from his sawmill which is located farther down Six Mile Creek Rd. Allen Morrow is buried in the cemetery behind Faith.

The church at the relocated site became Six Mile Presbyterian Church (dropping “Creek”) and continued until approximately 1964. OSMC on Henry Harris Rd. welcomed burials until the mid-1800s. Following the construction of the new church, burials commenced at the new site until approximately 1835.

To distinguish between the two sites, the original cemetery became known as Old Six Mile Cemetery, and the cemetery and church at the relocated site at first became known as Six Mile Church and Cemetery.

Faith Presbyterian Church owns the Old Six Mile Cemetery site and oversees the maintenance and preservation of the Revolutionary War State Historical site.

Christmas at Old Six Mile Cemetery
Each year, Christmas is celebrated at OSMC by placing wreaths and holiday flowers on
the graves of the patriots of the Revolution. That is a small thank you for the sacrifices they made in order that we enjoy the benefits of our great nation.
Old Six Mile Creek Presbyterian Church was established in approximately 1765 by Col. William Hagins, Commander of the Mecklenburg and Six Mile Creek Militia, and founder of the church.
Thank you to all the volunteers who have assisted over the years to help preserve this South Carolina Historic Site for future generations.
