Rotarians of Indian Rocks Beach at it again… Service Above Self! 💙💛

A big thank you to Vernon, Michael, and Silas for stepping up and helping make a home safer for a senior in our community. And of course, he was very pleased with the work and even tried it out himself to make sure everything worked! 😜

Rotarians at work, making a difference one project at a time! 🙌

We had the pleasure of welcoming Mark Middleton, Rotary District 6950 Governor, as our speaker today!

Mark shared a little history of Rotary, the size and impact of District 6950, and most importantly his own incredible journey to Rotary.

His story began working in restaurants during high school, then college and life beyond. After a break in at his home that police believed was an inside job, Mark decided it was time for a change. He packed a bag, grabbed his camera, and started traveling, eventually finding his way to Thailand and Cambodia.

What he experienced there changed his life. Seeing firsthand how people lived and how little they had gave Mark a completely different perspective. After two years abroad, he returned to the United States with a new outlook on life and service.

Mark also shared his Rotary moment and the story of how he became a Rotarian. He was invited to speak at a Rotary Club, only to discover it was actually a recruiting attempt by his neighbor! Apparently, everyone liked him enough that they invited him back the following week. 😄

He joined, quickly became involved, and eventually started a clean water project—putting Service Above Self into action.

Thank you, Governor Mark, for sharing your journey, your passion for Rotary, and the experiences that shaped your commitment to helping others.

This is what Rotary is all about ordinary people using their experiences, talents, and hearts to make an extraordinary difference.

💙 Rotary is more than Service Above Self. It’s also about showing up for fellow Rotarians and supporting the causes close to their hearts.

We were proud to come out and support our fellow Rotarian Michael Karl-Heinz Schulz and Ales for ALS! 🍺 Michael is hiding behind the ALS glass! 🤪

A huge thank you to Anecdote Brewing for collaborating with Ales for ALS and creating Hops for Herta, a wonderful IPA for a great cause.

And thank you to everyone who came out, raised a glass, tried Herta’s IPA, and helped raise funds in the fight against ALS.

This is what Rotary is all about—fellowship, community, and showing up for one another.

Before: Two young, fresh Rotarians from the Rotary club of Indian Rocks Beach ready to attack the landscaping cleanup! 💪🌴

After: Two mature, tired Rotarians wondering what we were thinking! 😂

But the landscaping looks refreshed, and that’s what matters. Service Above Self! 💙💛

Thank you, Vernon, for organizing!

Today we said goodbye to our good friend and fellow Rotarian, Cliff Koch, as he and his lovely wife, Heidi, head off on their next adventure!

They’re moving to Raleigh to be closer to their growing family, and while we’re excited for this next chapter in their lives, they will certainly be missed.

Cliff, thank you for everything you’ve done for our club and our community. We promise to carry on Rotary Runs the Beach and continue building on the incredible fundraiser you helped make it today! 🏃‍♂️🏖️

We wish you and Heidi nothing but happiness, family time, and great adventures ahead. Don’t be strangers, you’ll always be part of our Rotary family! ❤️
Cliff left us with this beautiful poem he wrote…

A New Phase Of Life
Several years ago, we moved to the west coast of Florida - very close to the beach,
A new home, a new start, nothing was out of reach.
The need to meet people and make new friends was important to me and my wife,
Starting new ways, a new beginning, a new phase of life!

It takes time to meet people, to make friends that you know and can trust,
You try here and there and sometimes… it’s simply just a bust!
Part of the search was to figure out how to give back,
But I needed to learn about the community, because I didn’t know jack!

I joined a fitness group that seemed pretty cool,
Running and biking and socializing gave me my activity fuel,
But something was missing, I had an emotional hole,
The need to give back was a passion, a need for my soul.

I saw a Rotary sign on my drive to the Gulf one day,
Rotary…I think I heard of them…the internet I did survey.
It sounded good, it felt right, appeared worthy - not at all silly,
So I asked around and a friend was a member, his name was Billy. 😊

I went to some meetings and an event or two,
And before too long I had a T-Shirt, colored Rotary blue.
Friendships began, with no judgement, nor strife
Creating new friends, giving back to the community, a new phase of life!

We want your thoughts, we want your time, they said ‘you should volunteer!,
You could do this, you could do that, and we always finish with some beer,
And before I knew it, I was on the Board and volunteered on various things that were fun!
Then we needed another fundraiser, and I said “how about a beach run…”

Soon enough a race was created, with trepidation by many,
Is this worth it?, We could lose money! It could cost us a pretty penny!
But a success it was!, due to our great club and precision sharp as a knife,
Rotary Runs The Beach, a brand-new project, a new phase of life!

Years have passed, and the Rotary IRB has always been fun and fantastic,
Many things have changed, members come and go, continuously elastic,
But the 4-way test (plus 1) stated each week always prevails,
Being truthful and fair, building goodwill and ensuring it’s beneficial – just never fails.

Children grow up, and have grandchildren, move away and we miss them oh so dearly,
The phone is great, video calls even better, but in person the best, clearly, clearly.
Life moves way too fast, gray hairs now the majority, so what do we do?
We visit often, take vacations, though to our heart we must be true.

After some discussion and thought, we decided the time is now,
What are we waiting for? - let’s be with our family, as much time as allowed,
Find a new home, sell our house, take a deep breath, here we go - no turning back,
Gather your stuff, buy some boxes, and pack, pack, pack, pack!

I will miss you all, our wonderful club, Heidi and I will miss everyone,
The meetings, the events, the socials, the giving, and of course the annual beach Run.
And so away we go to North Carolina, hand in hand, me and my wife,
A new beginning, yet another adventure, a new phase of life!

We were honored to have Dan Masi with the Florida Elks as our speaker today!

Dan shared the fascinating history of the Elks, dating back to the 1800s, as well as the incredible work they are doing today to support children and families.

One of their biggest initiatives is the Unmasking Autism Gala, their largest fundraising event supporting autism testing for children. 100% of the funds raised go directly toward testing.

Autism testing can cost between $4,500 and $6,500 per child, and in many cases, it is not covered by insurance. For families who simply cannot afford that expense, the Elks are helping provide access to this critical testing.

The testing is done at their camp, where they have found children are often more comfortable and relaxed than in a traditional doctor’s office setting. And we know that when it comes to autism, earlier testing can make a tremendous difference.

The Unmasking Autism Gala has already raised over $250,000 for autism testing! What an incredible impact!

Thank you, Dan, for spending your morning with us and sharing the history of the Elks and the important work you’re doing for children and families throughout Florida.

We were honored to have Thomas Ries from Ecosphere Restoration Institute as our speaker this morning!

Thomas shared some fascinating information about living shorelines vs. traditional seawalls. Beyond the significant difference in cost, living shorelines can be designed to withstand everything from low to high energy water environments while helping protect and restore the natural ecosystem. 🌊🌿

Restoration that lasts, ecologically, socially, and economically.

Ecosphere Restoration Institute brings more than three decades of experience delivering measurable restoration stabilizing shorelines, rebuilding wetlands, improving water quality, and restoring ecosystems that protect both people and wildlife.

Thank you, Thomas, for spending your morning with us and educating our club on solutions that can make a lasting difference in our Florida communities.

The Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach enjoying Rotary at the Rays Night! ⚾️💙💛

We had a great time together at the ballpark! We will NOT, however, talk about the Rays losing after coming off an incredible 9-0 road trip! 😬

I’m sure our presence had absolutely NOTHING to do with the loss. 😂😎⚾️

Always a great time when Rotary fellowship goes beyond our Wednesday morning meetings!
