If you've wandered the halls of Herron, you might notice a limestone scultpure of a bison. The 1,200 pound locally sourced stone sculpture was created by Brown County-based artist William A. Galloway. "Bison of North America" was commissioned by the INB Financial Corp., now part of J.P. Morgan Chase, in 1992. The sculpture then found its way on the terrace of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian & Western Art until it officially became part of the museum's collection in 1998.
At some point, the scultpure became affectionately known as Buffy the Bison, not to be confused with the vampire slayer. The series debuted one year prior to its acquisition, which could be the reason for the nickname, or beacuse it is a shortened name for a buffalo.
The museum deaccessioned the sculpture in the past year to serve as a reference tool for the school's sculpture department in addition to honoring the former logo for INB, IU Bloomington's mascot, and the State of Indiana.
We're happy to say that Buffy has found a home here right at Herron!
