WHAT: Knozone Action Day
WHEN: SUNDAY and MONDAY, July 19 & 20
WHY: Particulate Matter (PM2.5)
WHO: Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (Orange)

πŸ“² Sign up for text or email alerts at smogwatch.in.gov or airnow.gov

Members of sensitive groups are likely to experience more serious effects from unhealthy air quality and should avoid time outdoors as much as possible. This includes people with:

- Asthma
- COPD
- Emphysema
- Heart or lung disease or cancer

as well as children, elderly people, outdoor workers, and those who are pregnant or nursing.

Every day, and especially on Knozone Action Days, residents are encouraged to reduce their contribution to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) through these simple actions:

🚫 Never burn trash, furniture, leaves, or grass clippings. Burning these items is always illegal in Marion County and punishable by fines up to $2,500. If you encounter illegal open burning, utilize the RequestIndy mobile app or website or call the Mayor's Action Center at 317-327-4622. If it's an emergency, call 911.

πŸ”₯ Avoid campfires, bonfires, and barbecues until the air quality returns to healthy levels.

🚌 Drive less! Choose a cleaner commute: carpool, ride the bus, or bike or walk if you can!

Visit Knozone.com for more.

- Emphysema
- Heart or lung disease or cancer

as well as children, elderly people, outdoor workers, and those who are pregnant or nursing.

You can take individual action on air quality by adopting some of the habits below:
βœ”οΈ Wait to refuel until it’s cool. Same with using gas-powered lawn equipment.
βœ”οΈ Avoid idling gas-powered vehicles.
βœ”οΈ Drive less! Choose a cleaner commute: carpool, ride the bus, or bike or walk if you can!
βœ”οΈ If you must be out, combine your errands to reduce your trips.
βœ”οΈ Delay using chemicals - the Volatile Organic Compounds in many household cleaners are an ingredient for ozone creation.
βœ”οΈ Spread the word! Chances are someone you know has asthma or COPD and should stay indoors.

Did you know? It's illegal to dispose of whole tires through curbside or heavy trash pickup. Here's an opportunity for proper disposal at no cost!

Do you have used tires that you need to get rid of? Drop them off later this month on Saturday, June 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Tire Recycle Day. We can take up to six tires as long as they aren't on rims.

β›ˆοΈ June 17 – Are You Severe Weather Prepared?

With hail, damaging winds, tornadoes, and flash flooding possible today, make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts:

β€’ Register for Marion County emergency alerts by texting MESAINDY to 67283
β€’ Enable weather and news app notifications on your phone
β€’ Have a NOAA Weather Radio
β€’ Monitor the National Weather Service Indianapolis forecasts
β€’ Watch local news weather updates

🚨 Remember: Marion County's outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors to seek shelter immediately. Sirens are not intended to warn people who are already indoors.

Know your emergency plans and be prepared to act.

Did you know you can recycle plastic bags and other plastic film at your local Kroger?

Most curbside bins don't accept plastic film, but Kroger stores have drop-off bins near the entrance for:

- Plastic shopping bags
- Bread and produce bags
- Zip-lock style bags (empty and clean)
- Dry cleaning bags and plastic wrap

Just make sure items are clean and dry before dropping them off. Once collected, the film gets processed into new materials like composite lumber, keeping it out of landfills and in the loop.

This small habit can create a real impact. Find a drop-off location at How2Recycle.info or check inside your local Kroger's entrance.
