Today, we celebrate 248 years of the United States Army defending our country 24/7. Tasked with protecting the freedom of the original 13 colonies, the US Army is the oldest branch of the US Military.
On 14 June 1775, Congress "Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen, be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia… and as soon as completed, shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army."

On June 6th, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight N**i Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, "we will accept nothing less than full victory." More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day's end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives in D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to being the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler's crack troops.
Today we remember the sacrifices of these young men and women that braved such great odds to defeat a terrible evil.
