Every now and then while doing the work I do within the community, (MRT) Moral Reconation Therapy and Peer Recovery Coach Training, I come accross individuals whose situation seems more than hopeless...Sometimes next to impossible...This young man right here is a clear example of a situation that seemed beyond hopeless...formerly incarcerated, released on 10 years house arrest & Probation with nothing but the possibility of returning to prison staring him right in the face. Erick Palacios had some difficult choices to make and hurdles to overcome if he was going to reestablish himself as a productive citizen within our society...Through Val Tate and The Indianapolis WeCANN Academy, Eric came to one of my MRT classes (How to escape your prison) which addresses the mental and physical aspects of making intelligent and intentional Cognitive choices. After completing that course, he enrolled in another MRT class, Job Readiness, then another, MRT Trauma informed class, then We connected him to a TRADE through The Indiana Plan as a Millwright, while enrolling him in yet another MRT program, Untangling Relationships...All of this during the uncertain time of the COVID19 Pandemic which created obstacles making his journey even more challenging...Alot of his Trainings required him to participate through ZOOM and DUO CALLS...This young man not only showed up but he THRIVED all while constantly dealing with the possibility of one mistep sending him back to prison. After 3 years on house arrest with no violations, We collectively began petitioning the court through letters and motions on Eric's behalf that he be released from the constraints of GPS monitoring...A few days ago our prayers and efforts were rewarded by the judge releasing him from the remainder of his house arrest (amounting to 7 years which he had left to do) based on Eric's efforts and the efforts of the groups who took the time to believe in him...Eric is now a Millwright by trade through Indiana Plan, with a union card, making good money, has an apartment, and a car that is paid for, He believes The Wecann academy's continued support and informational services was a very helpful part of his transition... He also attributes his emotional stability and his mental health and wellness improving having participated in the many Growing Indy MRT Trainings... I am so proud of this young man, he is the true example of what is possible through hard work and perseverance...WE CAN CHANGE LIVES...WATCH US WORK... Congratulations Eric...Well done! Great work GROWING INDY, WECANN ACADEMY, and INDIANA PLAN...and all those who provided barrier buster funds and continued support throughout his journey!
