Last week, Chesterton High School SRO Sgt. Chris Swickard brought in one of CPDβs finest, Cpl. Ryan Miller, to guest instruct in his Intro to LE & 1st Responders class about the use of drones.
The students learned about drone technology and its use by first responders for various tasks, such as locating missing or fleeing persons, searching buildings, investigating serious traffic crashes, and recording police training sessions like fi****ms and vehicle operations.
This was Cpl. Miller's first time presenting to students about drone use. After a few ice-breaking jokes (which the students loved), he delivered his presentation like a seasoned pro. Following the classroom session, students went outside for a drone demonstration, where Cpl. Miller showcased both regular and thermal cameras.
Sgt. Swickard has been teaching the Intro to Law Enforcement & 1st Responders course for 4 years, bringing in guest instructors to cover topics like search and rescue, investigations, and emergency medical services. The course aims to provide students with insights into the professions of police, fire, and EMS, especially for those considering careers in these fields. Sgt. Swickard is the only SRO in Porter County teaching a credited course at the high school level.
Thank you, Sgt. Swickard and Cpl. Miller, for being positive role models for the Duneland Community!
