🦝Every day is different and yesterday was no exception. Officers were flagged down about a raccoon that was trying to cross keystone avenue. Officer Mastin and Officer Frazier were able to get it on a leash and safely across the road.

🦝Judging by his hand over his face he was pretty embarrassed about his police escort. He remained calm and was able to be picked up and taken to animal control.

🕊 End Gun Violence 🕊

This morning, Mayor Hogsett and Chief Taylor attended a memorial service for Mr. Johnny Purchase. Mr. Johnny was known as a leader in our community. Mr. Johnny helped youth and those in need throughout the Martindale- Brightwood Community.

On average 14,500 people die yearly due to firearm violence. There are approximately 115,000 non-fatal firearm injuries in the U.S. each year.

It is time for us to come together and end gun violence. Together we can build a better future for all of Indianapolis.

🚒🚑Accident Response🚓🚑

This morning IMPD Officers responded to an accident with injury at 8200 Lantern Road.

Officer Treft was off duty but he quickly jumped into action. He began assisting an injured female trapped in the red vehicle. Officers were able to break the windshield and render aid. Officer Dian, Jennings and Hitchcock assisted both injured parties.

Be careful while driving, roads are slippery and the clear sunny sky make it hard to see.

🚑🚒 We thank Indianapolis EMS and Indianapolis Fire Department for helping both drivers get immediate and necessary medical attention.

📱💻 Valuables Check 📸💵

🚫With warm weather comes an increase in vehicle break-ins. Theft prevention starts before you even leave your car. Smash and grab thieves are typically opportunists. Before you get out of your car, make sure your valuables are out of sight or taken inside with you. Never leave things lying out on your seats, dashboard or floors.

Ever see a cop walking the “Beat”? That’s exactly what some of your Eastside Cops are doing.

It’s not a new concept... and it can still be as effective as it was in the old days. Some IMPD East District Officers are getting out of their cars and walking the streets.

Pictured... you see a couple officers speaking with a homeowner... meeting him where he is instead of waiting on him to contact the police. He discussed the current events in the neighborhood with the officers and thanked them for the face to face service.

Service to our community starts with communication... and that’s what we are trying to achieve here... if you have any neighborhood concerns feel free to send us a message here or tell an officer when you see them patrolling your neighborhood.

Have a great Wednesday Indy and stay safe.

Great job IMPD East District!

Great job IMPD East District!

Gunshots and bullet holes into a Residence is what the officers were called to investigate. It turned in to so much more... QUICKLY.

An IMPD East District Middle Shift Officer went to a residence to take a report of bullet holes through the house and of their vehicle. While the Officer was onscene he heard Gunshots being fired in very close proximity.

Without hesitation... the Officer ran towards where he heard the gunfire... he also radioed for assistance at the same time. As he ran to find the source of the gunfire, the Officer encountered a subject holding a Mac-10 Handgun. The Officer gave commands to the subject to drop the gun at which time the subject did not and pointed it in the officers direction before turning and retreated into a residence.

The Officer along with his back up established a perimeter and called for the subject. The subject exited without incident and was taken into custody and discovered to be a juvenile.

Officers were granted a search warrant and discovered more guns inside the residence as well as 63 expended 9mm handgun shell casings and 8 expended 5.56 shell casings. All of this was close to the original call of gunshots and bullet holes in a nearby residence... it is believed this was the source of the damage and gunshots. The firearm that the subject had was located and taken into possession along with the others pictured.

The juvenile subject was arrested for pointing a firearm at law enforcement, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and criminal recklessness.

No matter the call... no matter the danger... your Officers will always show up when you call. Things can go from a simple report taking call for service to a very dangerous situation very quickly... and this is an example of that.

Thank you Officer for doing what the citizens ask of you. Removing these firearms as part of this investigation has potentially saved lives. Job well done.

Please don’t fire your weapon into the air. It’s extremely dangerous.
12/31/2020

Please don’t fire your weapon into the air. It’s extremely dangerous.

Rocket Science.... 🚀 what goes up ⬆️ must come down ⬇️.

IMPD East District encourages everyone to Celebrate New Year’s Eve safely... don’t discharge your weapons into the air during New Year’s celebrations and don’t drive drunk... don’t start off 2021 poorly (2020 has been bad enough).

Bullets fired into the air can travel up to a mile and when they descend back down, they travel with enough velocity to penetrate a human skull. Firing a weapon into the air is not only dangerous but also illegal and can lead to serious injury, even death. If you choose to fire a weapon into the air, you could face arrest and prosecution.

As far as drinking and driving... ask yourselves this, is it worth the cost of your life or someone else’s life? Or is it worth $10,000... $10K is about the cost for legal fees and other fines if you are arrested for drunk driving... The solution is simple, if you plan on being out tonight and are enjoying alcoholic beverages: take responsibility for finding a safe/sober ride home for NYE now... Uber, Lyft, Taxi, Tow Truck, IndyGo to name a few options.

If you see someone driving intoxicated or firing a weapon, we urge you to call 9-1-1.

IMPD looks forward to 2021 and urges everyone to celebrate responsibly.

💔🐾 Sending our condolences to
Boone County Sheriff's Office in Illinois.
May K9 Loki rest easy, with lots of tennis balls and treats.

A reminder to not drink and drive 🚫🍺

It’s with a heavy heart the Boone County Sheriff’s Office has to report that K-9 Loki was killed in the line of duty early this morning.

On December 27th, 2020, at approximately 1:30 am, Boone County Deputy Robert Rosenkranz and K9 Loki were conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 90 near Irene road, when a suspected drunk driver struck the rear of Deputy Rosenkranz’s squad. Thankfully, Deputy Rosenkranz was out of the vehicle and only received minor injuries from flying debris. K9 Loki however was in the vehicle at the time of the accident and was transported to Emergency Vet Clinic in Rockford where K9 Loki later passed.

The Illinois
State Police, District 15 are investigating the accident.

The members of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office offer our deepest condolences to the Rosenkranz family. We ask that you keep the Rosenkranz family and our law enforcement family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Additional information will be released at a later time.

Rest in peace hero K9 Loki.

General information

Initial Consolidation - January 2007 The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was established on January 1, 2007, by General Ordinance 110 consolidating the former Indianapolis Police Department with the law enforcement division of the Marion County Sheriff's Department. The ordinance assigned responsibility for the police department to the sheriff who appointed a chief of police, under whose direction the department operated. To assist in the establishment of the new department, the Ordinance established three authorities and committees: The Metropolitan Law Enforcement Transition Authority consisting of the mayor, the sheriff, and the president of the city-county council; A 15-member Consolidation Transition Advisory Committee and A 43-member law enforcement steering committee, which was divided into the sub-committees of: Personnel Issues; Logistics/Operations; Investigations; Civilian Employees; Fleet; Public Appearance; Facilities; Policies and Procedures; Training; Merit System; Information Technology; and Community Policing The authority, committees, and sub-committees met regularly in public forums to develop policies and make the decisions needed to implement the new department. Approximately one year after the initial consolidation, the City-County Council amended the Revised Code to establish the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department as the police division of the department of public safety. Under the Amended Code, IMPD now operates under the day-to-day direction of a chief of police who is appointed by the director of public safety who, in turn, is appointed by the mayor of Indianapolis. With the establishment of the new Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, new department badge, patch, and logo designs were created. The designs were updated in May 2010.
