For Kathleen "Kat" McManus, who turns 29 today (Happy Birthday!) motivation to become a member of begins with a core memory and experience she had as a child. "IFD came to our house when my dad passed away and helped to comfort me as they were bringing my dad out. I was 3 at the time. Later, during an internship with IMPD I was on a scene with 3 children injured and saw that IFD cared from them ...just like they had cared for me... at that age. I also was supported by my best friend's dad who is an IFD Firefighter. He believed in me and my ability to do the job.

As a member of the class, I have strengths I can share with others but know I have a lot to learn from others as well." Kathleen has her sights set serving Indy on a fast-paced Squad at a Dive or Top Water Rescue TAC house. A Beech Grove native and graduate of Beech Grove High School, Kathleen earned a B.S. 7:41 AM - An unattended burn barrel is believed to be the cause of a blaze that extended to nearby combustibles and caught the rear of a home at 1201 Bates Street on fire. The occupants told IFD that the burn barrel had been going all morning and as they were inside eating breakfast, they soon noticed fire on the back side of the house. All 4 adult occupants evacuated the structure out the front door and are now displaced. The owners, have lived in the home for 17 years but have no insurance. None of the 4 were injured.

IFD Firefighters saw visible black smoke in the air while enroute and marked the fire working. Extreme clutter both inside and out made entry and access inside the structure dangerous and difficult. Despite the exterior clutter obstacles, IFD Firefighters performed a well coordinated attack and marked the fire under control in 40 minutes.
