Prevent Blindness Indiana

Prevent Blindness Indiana Prevent Blindness Indiana (PBI) originated from a society organized in the mid-1940s and became Prevent Blindness America’s (PBA) first affiliate in 1950.

Our mission is to prevent blindness and preserve sight through vision testing, ongoing education and public awareness. One in every four school-age children suffers an undiagnosed vision disorder that can have a devastating effect on his or her learning and development if left untreated. These children may end up falling behind or misbehaving in class do to their inability to see what's being taug

ht. Additionally, with an aging population, the number of Americans with age-related eye diseases is expected to double within the next 30 years. Therefore, identifying vision problems while they're still treatable is critically important for people of all ages!

Smokers are up to four times likely than nonsmokers to develop AMD according to a report in the British Journal of Medicine from the public health experts at the University of Manchester. Smoking is known to impede the effects of antioxidents and to reduce the macular pigment density. Oxidants can damage the retina.
